About Me:

With a B.A. and an M.Ed from the University of Southern Mississippi in hand, I set out to teach history.  But sometimes we end up going down another path.  I  veered off into another field and ultimately ended up at Pearl River Community College where I am a mathematics instructor.  I love my job!  Plus, I still get to indulge in my love of history through researching, writing, and giving presentations.

In 2014, PRCC named me the Outstanding Humanities Instructor of the Year. I realize this is strange considering I teach math, and I was rather surprised! This honor was awarded to me based solely on my work regarding women soldiers of the Civil War.   I have been researching them for over a decade.

The culmination of my research has resulted in a book which was published in 2019 by the University Press of Mississippi.  The title is Behind the Rifle:  Women Soldiers in Civil War Mississippi.  Click the link at the top of the page for more details.   Click here to order.

My articles have appeared in publications such as Mississippi History Now, Military Images Magazine, Gettysburg Magazine, and Camp Chase Gazette.  Also, I have written pamphlets for the National Park Service and state historic sites.

I have given presentations in over ten states for groups ranging from national parks and battlefields to colleges, Civil War round tables, libraries, historical societies, genealogical societies, various heritage organizations, and others.

Additionally, I participated in panel discussions at the Mississippi Book Festival and Southern Festival of Books, presented during the Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration, and appeared on C-SPAN2's Book TV and Fox News "Fearless & Proud" podcast.

I have also served as an associate editor for Savas Beatie publishing company.
