For healthy eating, the Sharp R1214TY stands out among sharp over-the-range microwave ovens as the most reliable choice for families who need consistent, high-power heating without fuss. If you prefer a larger interior footprint with modern smart-home integration, the Sharp SMO1759JS is the runner-up that wins on convenience and voice control capabilities.
• Sharp R1214TY — best for high-speed reheating and standard 9x13 dishes; pick this if you want maximum power output and a simple, durable interface that stays hidden behind the door.
• Sharp SMO1754JS — best for large family meals and quick express cooking; pick this if you need a slightly wider interior cavity and a dedicated melt-and-soften function for dairy or chocolate.
• Sharp SMO1759JS — best for tech-savvy kitchens and hands-free operation; pick this if you already use smart assistants and want to start cooking or adjust settings without touching the panel.
The Sharp R1214TY is a workhorse designed for those who prioritize raw cooking speed and simplicity above all else. With 1100 watts of power, it delivers more energy to your food than many competitors in this category, meaning frozen dinners reheat faster and leftovers reach serving temperature in a fraction of the time. This extra wattage is not just a number; it translates to real-world efficiency when you are rushing to get dinner on the table after a long day. The spacious 1.5 cubic feet of cooking space accommodates a full 9-inch by 13-inch baking dish, which is a rare and valuable feature for an over-the-counter unit that needs to handle casseroles and large platters without cutting them up first.
What makes this model particularly attractive is its "hidden" design philosophy. The Auto-Touch Control Panel sits behind the oven door, keeping the front face clean and free of smudges or clutter. When you are not cooking, the appliance looks like a sleek stainless steel box, but the moment you open the door, the controls reveal themselves. This is ideal for kitchens where aesthetics matter and you want to avoid a wall of buttons staring at you every time you walk into the room. The 7-digit display uses two colors to make time and settings easy to read from across the kitchen, even in low light.
I recommend this unit specifically for households that cook large batches or frequently reheat substantial portions. The combination of the 14-1/8-inch carousel turntable and the higher wattage ensures that food heats evenly without the cold spots often found in lower-powered models. The Smart & Easy sensor technology takes the guesswork out of reheating by automatically adjusting time and power based on moisture levels, so you do not have to stand there watching to prevent a mess.
The main trade-off here is the lack of modern connectivity features. There is no voice control or app integration, and the interface relies on physical buttons rather than a touchscreen. If you are looking for the latest in smart home compatibility, this might feel a bit dated. However, for someone who values reliability, straightforward operation, and pure performance over bells and whistles, this is the clear winner. It does exactly what a microwave should do: it cooks food quickly and effectively, period.

Moving up in capacity, the Sharp SMO1754JS offers a generous 1.7 cubic feet of interior volume, making it the go-to option for larger families or anyone who regularly prepares multi-layered meals. The 13.6-inch carousel turntable provides ample room for oversized plates and deep roasting pans, ensuring that your favorite 9x13 dishes fit comfortably alongside other items. This model steps up the design game with a contemporary edge-to-edge stainless steel finish that pairs beautifully with modern kitchen cabinetry. The gray interior contrasts nicely with the bright white LED lighting, creating a premium look that elevates the entire kitchen aesthetic.
One of the standout features of this unit is the Express Cook function, which allows you to jump-start cooking for up to nine minutes with a single touch. This is incredibly useful when you need to heat up a meal quickly but do not want to fiddle with setting specific times or power levels. Additionally, the dedicated Melt/Soften feature is a game-changer for bakers and cheese lovers alike. Whether you need to soften cream cheese for a dip or melt chocolate for a dessert without burning it, this preset handles delicate tasks with precision that manual settings often miss.
The sensor cook menu simplifies the daily routine by detecting steam and moisture to automatically set the perfect time and power for various foods. You simply select the food type, press start, and let the machine do the rest. The controls are intuitive, featuring a premium bright white LED display that is easy to read and navigate. While the 1000-watt output is slightly lower than the R1214TY, the increased interior space and specialized functions compensate for the difference in everyday scenarios.
However, users should be aware that the interface is a hybrid of buttons and a touchscreen, which some purists might find less tactile than a purely mechanical dial system. The installation requires careful attention to ventilation, as the fan moves 300 CFM of air, which is sufficient for most ranges but may require ducting adjustments in very tight spaces. Despite these minor considerations, the balance of size, style, and specialized cooking programs makes this a compelling choice for the busy parent who needs a versatile appliance that can handle everything from morning coffee to Sunday roast prep.
The Sharp SMO1759JS represents the pinnacle of convenience for the connected home, bringing the power of voice control directly into your kitchen workflow. Its defining feature is seamless integration with Alexa, allowing you to issue 65 different voice commands to start, stop, or adjust the microwave without ever lifting a finger. This is a massive advantage for parents juggling dirty dishes, chefs with messy hands, or anyone who simply wants to multitask while preparing a meal. You can ask the microwave to defrost a specific amount of meat or reheat a cup of soup while you are chopping vegetables elsewhere in the room.
Like its sibling, the SMO1754JS, this model boasts a spacious 1.7 cubic feet interior and a 13.6-inch turntable, making it equally capable of handling large family meals. The design remains consistent with the edge-to-edge stainless steel look and gray interior, but the addition of the Express Cook feature extends the instant-start capability to ten minutes, giving you even more flexibility for quick fixes. The sensor cooking and melt/soften presets remain top-tier, ensuring that the cooking quality matches the technological sophistication.
The user experience here is defined by freedom. Instead of navigating through menus with your fingertips, you can speak naturally to the device. The bright LED display keeps all information visible, and the touchscreen controls offer a modern alternative for those who prefer direct interaction. The 1000-watt power level is robust enough for standard cooking tasks, and the manual defrost system gives you granular control when you need to thaw something delicate.
The primary drawback for some buyers will be the reliance on a smart home ecosystem. If you do not own a compatible speaker or prefer a traditional analog kitchen, the voice features may feel superfluous. Furthermore, the complexity of the connectivity adds a layer of setup that is absent in simpler models. Yet, for the shopper who sees their kitchen as part of a broader digital lifestyle, the ability to control appliances via voice is a transformative upgrade that justifies the selection of this model over the others.

Installation typically involves mounting the unit above a range and connecting it to electrical power and ventilation. While possible for experienced DIYers, professional installation is often recommended to ensure proper venting and safety compliance.
Warranty terms vary by model and region, so it is essential to check the specific manufacturer documentation included with the unit or contact the retailer for details on coverage duration and parts.
Yes, all three models feature smooth stainless steel or glass interiors that resist stains and allow for easy wiping down with a damp cloth, though the turntable and grease filters should be cleaned regularly for optimal performance.
