Shark Radar is a marine safety awareness app. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains exactly what data we collect, why, and how it is used.
What we collect: Your approximate device location (latitude and longitude), requested only when you open the map.
Why we collect it: Solely to centre the map on your nearest beaches and display relevant shark likelihood information for your area.
How it is used: Location is processed on-device to position the map view. It is not transmitted to our servers, not stored, and not linked to your identity.
When it is collected: Only while the app is in use (foreground). We do not request background location access.
When you voluntarily submit a shark sighting, the following data is stored:
The GPS coordinates you provide for the sighting location
Date and time of the sighting
Any description, species, or activity details you enter
Any photo you choose to upload
Your account email (if signed in) as the report author
This data is used to display sightings on the community map and inform risk assessments. Reports are moderated before publication.
If you create an account, we store your email address and display name. This is used to attribute your reports and allow you to manage your submissions. We do not sell or share this data with third parties.
We collect anonymous, aggregated usage data (e.g. screen views, feature interactions) to understand how the app is used and improve it. This data cannot be used to identify you.
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes. Sighting location data submitted voluntarily is displayed publicly on the map as part of the community safety network.
Sighting reports are retained to maintain an accurate historical record of marine activity. You may request deletion of your submitted reports by contacting us.
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data at any time by contacting us. If you are in Australia or the EU, you have additional rights under applicable privacy law.
Shark Radar is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
For privacy questions or data requests, contact us through the feedback button within the app.
This privacy policy applies to the Shark Radar iOS and web applications.
