When you open a file from your OneDrive or SharePoint while signed in with a work or school account, it sometimes opens the file in the browser instead of the desktop app. If you want the file to be opened in a desktop app, you can do it by using the Open in app option.

The Open in app feature supports all file types, not just Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. For example, you can open a .pdf or a .mp4 file in the desktop app by clicking the Open in app option.

If there is a default app available to open a file, then the Open in app option automatically chooses the default app to open that file. If the default app is not configured, it asks you to select a default app. Select an app and click Just once to open the file in that app.

If I provide a link to an Excel file stored on SharePoint via e-mail, Teams, Skype, etc., the file downloads and does not open in the native app (like it used to). I am using the direct link, not the SharePoint provided link. I know I can add ?web=1 to the link to force it to open in the browser and that is what I am doing (when I remember) for now.

I do not understand why this behavior is happening. It cannot be browser dependent as it is downloading. It may be SharePoint library settings but I can only find settings to force it to open in app or browser NOT download?

@80Mark80 Thanks for checking. We just had Office 365 update and direct links in e-mails do look to be opening in the app now (YAY!) but tried the link in Teams again and it still downloads. PowerPoint file link in Teams downloaded also. Looks like Microsoft is "fixing" issues like this slowly, but surely.

@ShelliG_N It probably won't have an effect on your issue, but that is the browser that I have been testing with--if you were using the older version of Edge, it might have different functionality, like downloading instead of opening a file.

@80Mark80 Has anyone solved this mystery. I have tried all of the suggestions. I have a list created, and within the list, one of the columns is a hyperlink to an excel document. I am using Chrome. I did try switching by default browser to Edge, and the link still did not open in the desktop app. My site and library setting both open in the client application. Here are two different versions of my link. The names are changed for security purposes.

In essence, no PDF application out there (such as Adobe Reader) implements a Chrome plugin to automatically open in the desktop application. We moved away from IE at the start of 2021. We allow users the freedom to use Edge or Chrome as their primary browser. I've been using Chrome exclusively for over a year with no issues. Starting last week(ish) when users click links in SharePoint using Chrome the files are downloaded instead of opening in the client application. The right click "Open in App" still works, but apparently that extra effort is a huge deal for most staff..

Around the same time MS Edge started prompting users with the "Open this file?" message instead of just opening the document in the client application. Another minor nuisance, but it started around the same time.

In your case, It is recommended to set Default open behavior for browser-enabled documents to Open in the client application. Go to Library settings > Advanced Settings, you will find the option under the "Opening Documents in the Browser" section. 


After then, when users click the file in the library, a prompt message which instruct them to open the file in the client application will appear. 

 

The document will be opened in the client application as read-only mode. They cannot save the file with the same name directly to the SharePoint Online library and have to save the document with a new name or save to local and upload again.

Thanks for your reply. i think the point you mentioned documents will be open read only mode that works only when you are in classic experience not modern. in modern if i click on the document, directly opening with client application and can edit them and automatically saving into SharePoint.

This does not help for me : opening docs in app instead of browser does not open them in read only mode. I can still edit the docs and save them : changes are then saved in sharepoint instead of locally.

Yes that's correct, at the moment I'm using the Sharepoint Connector and displaying a Gallery of items (which are the items in the Sharepoint Library). At the end of each row I've added a button that runs Download(ThisItem.'Link To File') when the button is selected.

What I'm looking for is a way to actually download the file on select of the button instead of it opening in a new tab and having the user download it from a different page (in essence this is an extra unneeded step).

Upon clicking a download button in PowerApp I had to create a file in Sharepoint through MS Flow and return a download link to download it. By default Sharepoint "Create sharing link for a file or folder" item doesn't provide a direct download link instead it provides a link to edit or view the file. So I couldn't download my file. Then I found the given resource and according to the suggestion I added "?Download=1" at the end of the "View and edit" link. It solved my problem. 



I uploaded an html page into the SiteAssets of SharePoint 2010. When I click on it or type the url in it tries to download instead of opening it in a browser. Should I put the html file somewhere else? Do I need to create a new site collection?

I agree with Randy in that each Document Library has its own settings which default to 'Default to server settings' or which could be set to open in client or open in browser. If you have at least Design permission to the Library in question, you can change the setting to open in browser.

Less likely is the change in the Site settings themselves. If the default for ALL document libraries has changed to open in client, and you would like the default to be open in browser, you will need to go to Site Settings at the top level site (you need Admin privileges for the top site for this one I believe), then Site Collection Features. Make sure that Office Web Apps is activated, and that Open Documents In Client Applications by Default is not activated.

I have also encountered the same problem. It seems like a chrome update came out and now opening in client app no longer works, all documents open in the web app (despite the default being client app in SP). All users started experiencing the same problem on the same day.
