"Chikni Chameli" is a song from the 2012 Indian Hindi action drama film Agneepath, directed by Karan Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar. A remake of Marathi song "Kombadi Palali" from the 2006 film Jatra: Hyalagaad Re Tyalagaad. The song was first revealed on 16 December 2011 and features Katrina Kaif as the lead, along with Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt. The song was sung by Shreya Ghoshal and the dance choreographed by Ganesh Acharya.[1]
Chikni Chameli was picturised on Katrina Kaif as a special dance number for Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Dutt-starrer Agneepath. It was written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, sung by Shreya Ghoshal with music by Ajay and Atul. Ganesh Acharya had choreographed the song.

In the video, Agneepath director Karan Malhotra also talked about how it was Lochan, the assistant sound designer of the song, who asked him if he had heard Ajay-Atul's Marathi song Kombadi. Ajay-Atul also open up about how Karan Johar and Karan Malhotra approached them for the song and asked them to write as good lyrics for the Agneepath song as in Kobdi.

While speaking to a leading entertainment website recently, Karan expressed his concern over item songs as he said, An item song is when she is objectified and when there are men lusting for her like Chikni Chameli. I don't think I would ever do that again. It's never gonna happen in a Dharma Productions film and I will make sure of it. Like Desi Girl is not an item song but Chikni Chameli is. And, I don't think I would do it."
An item number, by its very definition, is a song inserted into the narrative not because it serves any plot-furthering purpose, but mostly as some sort of titillation to draw largely male audiences into the theatres. It usually features an attractive , scantily clad woman dancing to entertain men.
Again, given the relative harmlessness of the song, perhaps it seems a bit harsh to mock Johar as an oathbreaker (Game Of Thrones-time merits at least a passing reference, right now!). Or maybe now is exactly the right time to wonder why so many Bollywood bigwigs (it goes far beyond Johar) are so quick to announce intent, but so slow to back it up with action.
