Digital art & photography
2020
Each artwork in the series represents a specific issue during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, paired with a corresponding call to action.
The plates, backgrounds, and other visual elements are photographed, while the food is drawn, playing on the Filipino slang use of “drawing” to describe cancelled plans or false promises. Although the food appears to be served, it remains inedible, reflecting the false hopes and unfulfilled promises surrounding these issues.
The works address concerns such as mass testing, flattening the curve, medical funding, and the challenges of online class learning, while also touching on other political and social issues that emerged during the pandemic. Through satire and subtle surreal details, the project invites viewers to look more closely at what is being served to them and to become more critical of the issues surrounding them.
Featured here is a loaf of bread inspired by a popular local bread brand. Rats wearing barongs enter the packaging and feed on the bread, symbolizing corrupt government officials who take advantage of abundant resources. Beside the loaf, ants feed on scattered bread crumbs, representing the masses who are left with little to no resources.
Inspired by instant noodles, a known form of “ayuda", this work addresses the Philippine government’s prioritization of its relations with China. It presents the satirical possibility of the Philippines becoming a province of China.
Referencing another popular form of “ayuda", a brand of instant milk and cereal flakes for children, this work addresses the shift to online classes during the pandemic and its disregard for those who could not afford the resources needed for online learning. The cereal in the bowl is shaped into a castle, representing those who can afford the transition, while the houses below are submerged in water subtly shaped like Wifi icon, symbolizing those who are left behind without access to the same resources.
