I recently upgraded a family member's laptop from Windows Vista to Windows 10 and am trying to install a driver for an HP LaserJet 4050 TN printer. I created a TCP/IP port and used the Windows Update option to get a list of drivers, but Windows gives a "Printer driver was not installed" error. I tried again several times but got the same result.

I installed a generic driver instead, but that caused the printer to show a "79.8109 printer error." The issue persisted even after I removed the device. I had to do a system restore to fix the problem.

The PS driver defaults to Level 2 and has worked for me. Caveat here: some applications may override this setting and send PS Level 3 to the printer (notably Acrobat Reader). You need to throttle that in the print options.

Update 3 December 2018: So far, the furthest progress I've made has been with CraftyB's answer. Here is the output from his PowershellOutput instructions. It identified the .inf file for my printer as prnhp001.inf. I don't think this is a "default driver" as some have suspected. Also perhaps worth noting is this is purely a network printer on my home network.

Update -- Mission Complete. Using CraftyB's answer, I took the entire folder indicated in the "InfPath" results of his 2nd block of code and browsed there at the "Have Disk" prompt during install and it worked. For those who many not have a working pc to harvest the driver from in order to get their laserjet5 working on Windows 10, I provide them here.

The driver file is "upd-pcl5-x64-6.1.0.20062.exe", I could not find it on HP's support site, so I did a search, and found several locations listing this universal driver set. I found a site that didn't charge, but did plant a cookie ... which I will now have to elliminate. BUT, IT WORKS!!! I can't guarantee that it will work for you, but I suspect that it will work for several PCL printers "no longer supported".

I have an HP LaserJet 1300 printer connected to my network via a JetDirect 250m LIO Internal Print Server. The printer works from any Windows 8.1 computer on my network, but I have been unable to find an appropriate driver for Windows 10. The printer only understands PCL5 and PS.

So, I deleted the printer but left the port, and created a new network printer using the manual option. This time, "hp LaserJet 1300 PCL 5" was a driver option! This came from the "failed" attempt at installing this driver:

Ultimately, this driver version (6.1.7233.1) was the one that ended up working. However, if this is done when creating a new printer, it will work fine.

I just installed the vista 64 bit driver on my windows 7 64 bit laptop and it is working beautifully. This is the link (sorry I don't know how to shorten them) If the link doesn't work you can search for drivers right on HP's website for the 1012 printer. It shows a list of platforms and I chose the vista 64 bit since a windows 7 wasn't listed. Good luck!

Forgot to add that I installed the printer by plugging in the usb first and then going to the printers/devices area to troubleshoot when the error for the missing driver popped up. I then clicked on properties and updated the driver for the usb port by pointing it to the unzipped file I downloaded from hp (link below). It took less than 5 minutes total and the printer is printing pages like it does for my vista desktop. No weird characters, lines, etc.

This article may be useful if you can't obtain a Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) signed printer driver from the printer manufacturer or from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site. It also provides methods to find a printer driver for a printer that isn't supported on your computer that's running a 64-bit version of Windows.

To print from a computer that's running a 64-bit version of Windows, you must have a 64-bit printer driver. You can't use a 32-bit printer driver on a computer that's running a 64-bit version of Windows.

We recommend that you first visit the Windows Vista Compatibility Center to find links to the latest 64-bit printer drivers. Its database contains thousands of the most popular printers and you can easily search by product name, number, or brand.

Drivers that aren't WHQL signed are also known as unsigned drivers. Drivers that are WHQL signed are also known as signed drivers. Search any one of the following locations for a non-WHQL signed driver for your printer:

Some printer manufacturers may interpret different printer emulations in different ways. If you use a printer driver from the same printer manufacturer that supports your printer emulation, you can possibly prevent some compatibility problems. For example, if your printer supports PostScript level 3 as its default printer emulation, look up the list of printer drivers that are supplied with the 64-bit version of Windows. You can do it to find another printer from the same printer manufacturer that uses the same printer emulation. Here are the steps.

When you use the following method, the print job is printed locally and the print job is then redirected to the network path. If you use this procedure, you don't receive printer updates from the print server when you update the printer driver on the print server.

On the computer that's running a 64-bit version of Windows, check if the correct printer drivers are located. You can also visit the Windows Update Web site or the printer manufacturer's Web site. If you can't find the correct driver, continue to the next step.

Some personal laser printers are less standard. Typically, PostScript level 3 is a superset of PostScript level 2. So if you have a printer that understands PostScript level 3, and a driver that uses PostScript level 2, the printed test may be decipherable. Similarly, PCL6/XL is based on PCL5e, and PCL5e is based on PCL5.

If you select a similar printer in the Add Printer Wizard on a computer running 64-bit Windows, consider the physical features of the printer. For example, if you require duplex printing on your documents, the compatible driver that you choose must also support duplex printing.

Other issues to consider include the availability of paper input and output trays, and the default orientation of the paper input. For example, printer drivers offer different methods to select duplex printing. If you choose a printer driver from the same manufacturer as your printer, you can increase the chance that duplex is implemented in the same way across the whole range of devices. Besides, if you pick a printer model that has a similar model series number, you can increase the chance that the printer driver is compatible.

If you select a compatible printer, you may experience compatibility issues. For example, you want to print to a monochrome laser printer. In this situation, you must find a printer driver that uses the same printer emulation. The same printer emulation typically ensures that the document prints legibly. But you may not have the required duplex feature available.

If you print to a color laser printer, and you install a compatible printer driver that uses the same printer emulation, you can print decipherable documents. However, subtle differences in text color may not be preserved. It means that documents such as photographs may not print with a high image quality.

It may be difficult to match an inkjet printer with a compatible printer driver. The rules that apply to other classes of printers don't always apply to inkjet printers, because there are many different types of inkjet printers on the market.

A device driver is a piece of software designed to help your machine communicate with your mobile device or computer. Brother drivers allow your Brother printer, label maker, or sewing machine to talk directly with your device. This allows the machinery to understand data sent from a device (such as a picture you want to print or a document you want to scan), and perform the necessary actions. Think of your Brother printer driver as the translator who helps your technology to communicate more effectively.

A fully updated and functioning Brother printer driver ensures smooth and streamlined communication between your printer and your laptop or mobile device, so there are no unexpected surprises or issues with the printing process. How do you install a Brother driver? Read on to find out!

So how can you tell that your Brother driver might need an upgrade? There are a few hints that can indicate you should check if there have been any updates for your Brother printer driver. These include:

In this article we will show you how to find the driver/software needed for your operating system.

Whether you have a new printer or computer, an updated operating system, or for some reason your printer and computer are no longer able to communicate, updating or reinstalling your drivers may be helpful.

To utilize all functions of your printer/scanner, the Canon software for your model may be necessary. Instructions on how to find these are below.

If you are installing your printer for the first time, have updated your computer operating system, or the printer is unable to communicate with the computer, you will need to download the recommended driver in order to print.

Choose the Download button to the right of the software or driver file you wish to download. In most cases, you will see a driver that is recommended for you. Downloading and installing the MP Drivers or Full Driver and Software Package will help you set your printer up to print and scan.
