The representation of coronavirus in YouTube songs
I published my research on "the representation of coronavirus in YouTube songs" in Discourse Net Collaborative Working Paper Series.
In the article, I examined a Spanish song about coronavirus on YouTube, showing how it offers an alternative discourse on coronavirus, characterised by the use of humour, interactivity and the use of participatory and multilingual literacy practices.
HappiLeeErin is one of v-bloggers I follow on YouTube who talk about mental health awareness.
I am interested in discourse on mental health online and on learning difficulties.
I presented on "the representation of bipolar on YouTube: subverting stereotypes on mental health diagnosis" in CADAAD (Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis Across Disciplines) conference.
You can read the abstract of my paper here, on my profile on academia.
New literacy Studies and teaching English for Academic Purposes
In this co-presentation, with Jake Groves, I argued for a more-personalised approach to teaching academic literacies and English for Academic Purposes that draws on students' hobbies and interests.
Students' hobbies are not only a domain that can steer students' motivation but are also a domain where literacy practices take place such as browsing an article about your favorite football player or checking the lyrics of songs on YouTube. Tapping into students' interests and passions in the classroom can not only motivate them but also help bridge a gap between everyday literacy practices and formal literacy skills taught at universities/schools.
My article is under consideration in the BALEAP conference proceedings.
From my presentation in the BALEAP conference, held online at the University of Glasgow
