Shah Rukh Khan's father, Mir Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian independence activist from Peshawar who campaigned alongside the Khudai Khidmatgar, a nonviolent resistance movement led by Abdul Ghaffar Khan that sought a united and independent India.[1][2] Mir was a follower of Abdul Ghaffar Khan,[3] and affiliated with the Indian National Congress.[4] He was also the cousin of the major general in the Indian National Army Shah Nawaz Khan.[c] According to Khan his paternal grandfather, Mir Jan Muhammad Khan, was an ethnic Pashtun (Pathan) from Afghanistan.[7][4][8] However, his paternal cousins in Peshawar later clarified that the family speaks Hindko and is originally from Kashmir, from where they settled in Peshawar centuries back, contradicting the claim that his grandfather was a Pashtun from Afghanistan.[4][9] As of 2010, Khan's paternal family was still living in the Shah Wali Qataal area of Peshawar's Qissa Khwani Bazaar.[4]
Khan was born on 2 November 1965 into a Muslim family in New Delhi.[15] He spent the first five years of his life in Mangalore, where his maternal grandfather, Iftikhar Ahmed, served as chief engineer of the port in the 1960s.[16][17][d] Khan has described himself on Twitter as "half Hyderabadi (mother), half Pathan (father), and some Kashmiri (grandmother)".[19]
His father died of cancer in 1981,[e] and his mother died in 1991 from complications of diabetes.[33] After the death of their parents, his older sister, Shahnaz Lalarukh (born 1960)[34] fell into a depressed state and Khan took on the responsibility of caring for her.[31][35] Shahnaz continues to live with her brother and his family in their Mumbai mansion.[36]
The roles in this phase of his career, and the series of romantic comedies and family dramas that followed, earned Khan widespread adulation from audiences, particularly teenagers,[80] and according to author Anupama Chopra, established him as an icon of romance in India.[81][82] He continued to have frequent professional associations with Yash Chopra, Aditya Chopra, and Karan Johar, who moulded his image and made him into a superstar.[83] Khan became a romantic leading man without ever actually kissing any of his co-stars,[81] although he broke this rule in 2012, after strong urging by Yash Chopra.[84]
Successes during this time included Aditya Chopra's Mohabbatein (2000), and Karan Johar's family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001),[87][101] which Khan cites as a turning point in his career.[102] Both films co-starred Amitabh Bachchan as an authoritarian figure, and presented ideological struggles between the two men.[103][104] Khan's performances in the films were met with wide public appreciation, and he was awarded his second Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for Mohabbatein.[58][105] Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... remained the top-grossing Indian production of all time in the overseas market for the next five years.[106]
Gauri Khan set the Internet on fire by sharing another grand family portrait, presumably shot for her coffee table book My Life In Design. The new frame features Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri, Aryan, Suhana and AbRam. Instead of donning coordinated outfits, the Khan family opted for different colours this time. Shah Rukh Khan sported a blue-coloured hoodie while Gauri was dressed in white. Aryan chose a red hoodie and AbRam sported a black shirt. Suhana Khan sported a denim short dress and she can be seen planting a kiss on Shah Rukh Khan's cheek. Gauri Khan wrote in the caption, "@penguinindia ...Design is like a puzzle - all the pieces have to come together to make a complete image #family #happiness #memories #familyfirst."
Gauri's family picture received big love from her friends. Farah Khan Ali wrote, "God bless you all." Sangeeta Bijlani dropped a few heart emojis. Maheep Kapoor, Namrata Shirodkar dropped love emojis too. Sussanne Khan wrote, "Such a beautiful frame."
A few months back, Gauri Khan shared a family portrait where they can be seen in shades of black and white. Gauri and Suhana can be seen twinning in white tops and black pants, while SRK, Aryan and AbRam can be seen in similar outfits - white T-shirts and blue jeans paired with black jackets. "My coffee table book, #MyLifeInDesign, now available in stores," read her caption.
However, if my company decides to do it (go public) through the CEO (chief executive officer) and CFO (chief financial officer), and if they think it is a good thing to do, or my accountant wants to do it for my family, I will say go ahead. But I will not participate."
Bombay is a city of apartments, no one buys, real estate is ruinously expensive. But Shahrukh, who grew up worrying about making rent, wanted to buy. So he found his dream house and bought it and then worked flat out for 5 years to pay it off. No long term mortgage, no borrowing against the income, nothing. And only once they had the house, did he think about starting a family. His children would never have to move, never feel insecure.
I have seen a very old interview where he mentioned that initially right after his wedding, they had no place to live and no room so his sister was sent to live with an aunt. Not sure what aunt this would be because he rarely mentions any extended family. She was living with him at least by 1994 because when he was filming DDLJ, his sister was very ill and admitted to the hospital in Switzerland while he was shooting there.
Fans are always thrilled to see pictures of Shah Rukh Khan, especially those featuring his family. Recently, unseen photos of the Khan family have been circulating on social media. The family came together for a photo shoot as part of Gauri's highly-anticipated coffee table book. Gauri shared one of these photos on her Instagram, featuring her posing with her family and announcing the availability of her book, "My Life In Design," in stores.
