Recently I read this article -Shadowsocks-Server-on-Windows but the guide is not complete and I don't know what to do after "pip install shadowsocks" command, I tried to "import shadowsocks" in Python IDLE. But I really don't know the next step how to run it in Windows.

The latest .NET language version that works on XP is 2.5.8 -windows/releases/tag/2.5.8 (requires .NET 4.0 -us/download/details.aspx?id=17718)

(By the way, there are some glitches with installing .NET 4.0 on XP, you have to give the system time to generate the cache at idle, otherwise it will take a long time to boot the system)

Unfortunately, shadowsocks 2.5.8 doesn't support the popular and modern chacha20-ietf-poly1305 cipher. It is the most common one. But the older cipher aes-256-cfb is supported. It can sometimes be found on public servers or you can raise your own server.

Shadowsocks is a cross-platform lightweight and highly efficient secure proxy application originally developed by @clowwindy and currently maintained by multiple developers. Shadowsocks was developed with python but has been ported to various programming languages. Out of many versions, shadowsocks-libev is written in C and is well maintained. The server version is working incredibly fast, and I think the client version will also work well. But there are few articles introducing the ways to build shadowsocks-libev on Windows. The official documentation only lists some commands. With the help of the developer, I am able to build it and run it on Windows platform.

After successfully building the app, you can find the binary in $HOME/ss/bin directory. There should be two executables. ss-local.exe is the client and ss-tunnel.exe is for another usage. Copy these two files to c:/bin/shadowsocks.

I live in China and regular VPN services don't cut it for me, so I am using Shadowsocks, provided by work, which in terms of useability, performance and speed, exceeds by far my personal VPN.But none of the network settings related to proxies in the "Preferences" seem to work. As soon as shadowsocks is on, firefox can't browse ANY page.Is this a bug, is there a way for me to make it work? Thanks a lot, I am not such a big fan of being forced to use google chrome (although it's a great software, it's quite resource hungry, and well, ..., it's google, I'd rather keep using firefox.

Shadowsocks is a free and open-source encryption protocol project, widely used in China to circumvent Internet censorship. It was created in 2012 by a Chinese programmer named "clowwindy", and multiple implementations of the protocol have been made available since.[7][8] Shadowsocks is not a proxy on its own, but (typically) is the client software to help connect to a third-party SOCKS5 proxy, which is similar to a Secure Shell (SSH) tunnel. Once connected, internet traffic can then be directed through the proxy.[9] Unlike an SSH tunnel, shadowsocks can also proxy User Datagram Protocol (UDP) traffic.

All of the server implementations listed above also support operating in client mode. There are also client-only implementations available for Windows (shadowsocks-win), macOS (ShadowsocksX-NG), Android (shadowsocks-android), and iOS (Wingy).[22] Many clients, including shadowsocks-win and shadowsocks-android, support redirecting all system traffic over Shadowsocks, not just applications that have been explicitly configured to do so, allowing Shadowsocks to be used similarly to a VPN. If an application doesn't support proxy servers, a proxifier can be used to redirect the application to the Shadowsocks client. Some proxifiers, such as Proxycap, support Shadowsocks directly, thus avoiding the need for a Shadowsocks client, but some require a client.

Create the Shadowsocks configuration file located at /etc/shadowsocks/shadowsocks.json. Paste the contents listed below into the file, noting the instructions in the shadowsocks.json Breakdown table for each property. Follow these instructions to determine the value you should set for each property.

Extract the contents of the .zip file into any folder and run Shadowsocks.exe. Shadowsocks runs as a background process. Locate the Shadowsocks icon in the taskbar (it may be in the Hidden Icons taskbar menu), right-click on the Shadowsocks icon, then click on Edit Servers. Enter the information that you saved in the shadowsocks.json file:

In the program, click the add server icon. You can manually enter all the data, specifying the server (IP address, instead of example.shadowsocks.org), port, password, and encryption method by clicking on "Manual Settings".

Double-click on the application shadowsocks.exe to launch the Shadowsocks for Windows client. If Microsoft Defender SmartScreen appears, click More info then Run anyway.

Open the Shadowsocks client and choose your desired server, but do not enable the system proxy. The shadowsocks proxy is always running when the client is open, even when the system proxy is disabled. We want to leave the system proxy disabled because we are using the VPN connection.

If you want to share this very fast VPN over shadowsocks connection with other devices besides your computer, you can set up a virtual VPN router. That is what I am doing for Netflix on my Roku in China and the streaming speed is VERY FAST.

The below image shows my actual streaming speed on Netflix though the graph in my firewall software. On the left is the bandwidth graph before tunneling the ExpressVPN US server over my Aliyun HK shadowsocks server, and on the right is after.

This project was heavily inspired by [shadowsocks/ShadowsocksX-NG]( -NG), which uses local Shadowsocks-libev binary to avoid complex integration with native C code. This means it can always use the latest Shadowsocks-libev version. be457b7860
