Femicide, as recognised by the United Nations, refers to the intentional killing of women and girls because of their gender. It represents the most extreme form of violence against women and is often rooted in unequal power relations, harmful social norms, and systemic discrimination. Femicide may occur in intimate partner relationships, within families, or in broader community contexts, and is frequently preceded by patterns of abuse, control, and coercion.
Shades of Us Storytelling Initiative for African People ("Shades of Us") commemorates the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence by honouring the lives of women who have been victims of femicide. This virtual memorial serves as a solemn reminder that beyond statistics are real women whose lives were violently cut short, and that urgent, collective action is required to prevent such loss. We must continue to demand accountability and ensure that all women and girls are protected by the State, their communities, families, and friends.
