Portrait of a graduate
In 2019, the District Educational Advisory Committee posed the following question: How do we create a system that addresses the needs of ALL students and empowers them to thrive from Transitional Kindergarten through life?
Developing the Portrait of a Graduate was the answer. Today, the Portrait of a Graduate challenges us to consider what students need to succeed in a rapidly changing world, nurturing SGUSD students with the skills and competencies they will need to succeed in college, career, and beyond, preparing them for their future.

a Message from our superintendent
When you surround yourself with great people, great things happen for students! As your Superintendent, I have the privilege of visiting our schools and witnessing incredible and innovative educational activities. At every level, I see students engaged in learning, and the energy, inspiration, and excitement are evident at every turn. Each day, our commitment to learning shines brightly on our journey to implement the district's Portrait of a Graduate. And the best part? We’re just getting started!
The San Gabriel Unified School District (SGUSD) is excited to launch our new Portrait of a Graduate (PoG) Website. The PoG represents our North Star, a culmination of extensive collaboration, research, and dedication to defining these six key competencies our students need to thrive in school and in their future. These six competencies have been thoughtfully developed and are being actively implemented in our classrooms, fostering an environment where students grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
Our new SGUSD PoG website is a comprehensive resource for students, staff, parents, and the community to explore these competencies in greater detail. It includes Portrait to Practice ideas, rubrics for assessing student growth, and a space to share stories that exemplify how the competencies are applied. There are also tips to help everyone integrate and apply the Portrait of a Graduate competencies into their daily educational experiences and the real world. We invite you to visit this SGUSD PoG website, learn more about our vision for our students, and see how you can support this important work.
Thank you for your dedication and for helping our students reach their full potential. Together, we are creating the #SanGabrielExperience!
- Mr. James Symonds, SGUSD Superintendent
