I will never, EVER, forget that cold morning, and the fear I felt entering the gate of Alex M. Mampana Primary School as an employee for the first time. I will never forget the nervousness and excitement of getting my first job.
As an educator's assistant, my main role was that of a reading champion. This meant that I was responsible for monitoring and facilitating reading activities in classes. I worked with children with reading difficulties, assisted in class activities and was involved in the running of reading clubs and campaigns.
However, this was not the full scope of my responsibilities, seeing as how I not only had a responsibility to the learners, but to the teachers as well. As such, I would also act as a relief for teachers in their absence, participate in the organization of school trips, school events and sports activities, and assist in the marking of learner tests and exams.
I value the time I spent at Alex because through working with children of different ages, I developed empathy and patience, which I now employ in my daily life. Also, being put in an environment where I had to organize a lot of firsts helped me be more adaptable and resilient at the face of challenges.
The most valuable lesson I learnt during my time there was: Be humble and leave your ego at the door. When working for a company, you serve a cause greater than yourself. Serve well.
