Samuel Evington  (he/they/"Sam")

Welcome

I'm an Assistant Professor / Lecturer in Mathematics at University College Dublin [Start: Oct 1, 2026].

Previously,  I have held postdoc positions at the University of Münster (DE), the  University of Oxford (ENG), and the University of Glasgow (SCO). I was also a postdoc at the Mathematical Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences (POL) with a secondment to the Fields Institute (CAN).  My PhD was awarded by the University of Glasgow in 2018 [Defence: December 2017] .

My research is in the field of Operator Algebras. More precisely, I investigate the structure and classification of simple, amenable C*-algebras. I'm also interested in topics at the interface between C*-algebras, subfactors and quantum symmetries. Recently, I have learnt what an étale groupoid is (!) and have been working on principal groupoid models of simple, amenable C*-algebras.

In 2026, I was awarded the inaugural UK Operator Algebras Prize (jointly with Chris Bruce).
