Book Descriptions
Title #1: Crackilton: A Novel
Set in the lower city of Hamilton, Ontario during the global recession of the late 2000s, this novel by S.E. Tomas depicts three and a half months in the life of a seasonally unemployed carnival worker named Jim. Convenience store parking lots, crack houses, and the welfare office are among the places Jim finds himself in this gritty, darkly funny, and compassionate story about a blue-collar guy struggling with crack addiction.
Title #2: Squeegee Kid: A Novel
Squeegee Kid is the story of a twenty-one-year-old carnival worker who winds up stranded, homeless, and living in a shelter in the downtown core of Toronto, Ontario. Based on S.E. Tomas’s own experiences in the ‘90s, and told from the perspective of Jim, his fictional alter ego, this autobiographical novel offers a raw first-person account of life on the streets of Canada’s largest city.
Title #3: Carny Short Stories Volume 1
In this collection of short stories, S.E. Tomas draws on his early experiences on the carnival, when he travelled through Canada and the United States with Conklin Shows. From gruelling setups and teardowns to drug-fuelled antics and one-night stands, these fourteen humorous stories provide a behind-the-scenes look at the travelling amusement business in the early '90s from the perspective of a freewheeling teenaged character named Jim.
Title #4: Carny Short Stories Volume 2
This collection of twelve stories follows Jim through the ’90s, as he continues to forge a career on the carnival in the games department. Young and disobedient to authority, Jim bounces around from show to show, honing his skills in the game while searching after hours for the next big thrill.
Title #5: Crackilton One More Time: A Novel
In this sequel to Crackilton, S.E. Tomas’s fictional alter ego Jim goes back to work in the spring of 2009, but his addiction tags along. A high-functioning and resourceful drug addict, Jim travels around Ontario, juggling his habit, job, and girlfriend Christine, who he keeps in the dark about his drug use.
