What is Co-op Housing?
Housing co-ops offer good quality, affordable housing operated on a non-profit basis. Members of co-ops have security of tenure and a say in how their co-ops are run. Any surpluses are re-invested in the housing to maintain it in good condition for future generations of members.
Members are involved in many aspects of managing the co-op, and maintaining the community. Housing co-ops were created to be co-operative, inclusive, community-based organizations, which provide safe, affordable housing to their members.
Co-ops make decisions democratically (one member, one vote), and so our members are actively engaged in the governance of our co-operative. This offers many educational and social opportunities to our members. Our Co-op provides a friendly place to live for established Ottawa residents and newcomers alike.
If you live in a housing co-op you are:
a voting member who contributes to the governance of the co‑op
part of a community where neighbors look out for one another
living in housing that will stay affordable because it’s run on a non-profit basis and is never resold
Housing co-op members have the right to:
elect a board of directors
run for the board
receive audited financial statements showing how the co‑op spent money
approve by-laws, rules and major policies
live there for as long as you like, if you keep to the by-laws or rules agreed on by the members
