Star City Games holds a Pokémon tournament every Sunday from 1pm-5pm.
This tournament is held for both first-timers and pros, as it is not elimination. When you participate, you get a chance to win a free $4.99 or less Pokémon card pack by guessing the picture of a Pokémon. Every time you win a battle, you get a five-dollar store credit, which can be saved up to buy something more expensive. They not only have Pokémon packs, but they also have Funko Pops, games, prebuilt decks, and much more.
This tournament is not just for kids; there is also an adult tournament. Admission is five dollars unless you are ten and under; then it’s free! Star City Games has tournaments weekly on Sundays from 1 pm-5 pm. The staff is genuinely nice if you need assistance. They also have free energy cards if you need some. These tournaments are attended by numerous students from Northside Middle School.
Sam Gann, NMS 7th Grader
Sam Gann is a 7th grader who likes Pokémon and goes to Star City Games to play in the tournament. His favorite Pokémon is Paldean Whooper and its evolution Clodsire because they look better than Whooper and Quagsire. His best Pokémon cards are Vulcanian and Volcorona. He got into Pokémon because his father, who plays the card game Magic the Gathering, thought he and his sister might like Pokémon. Sam thinks he has a powerful deck because he “uses cards to combo, so it is pretty powerful.” When asked about hobbies, he said he likes school more than Pokémon. He has battled at Star City about 20 times.
Camden Doss, a 6th grader, also likes playing Pokémon at Star City Games. His favorite Pokémon is Applin because “it is cute and because it was [his] first Shiny.” His best Pokémon card is Whailord and Magikarp tag team. Camden shared, “I got into Pokémon because I bought a pack one day and thought it was cool. So, I decided to play Pokémon.” He thinks he has a good deck because his deck can stall time. When he is not playing Pokémon, he enjoys making stuff out of pipe cleaners. He has played in these tournaments about eight times.

Charlie Emanuelson
Charlie Emanuelson is one of the Star City Games employees who runs the tournament. He has been working there for two years. His favorite part of the job is running events. His favorite Pokémon is Darkrai because he started playing when it came out. He does not like that some Pokémon cards are too expensive. Charlie started playing in 2007. His favorite card is a staff promo Hawlucha, which is a bonus from working there.
