I Tried Making Handmade Mooncakes in Singapore – Here’s What Happened
Sometimes, things don’t go exactly as planned — even if you’re following the recipe carefully. Case in point: this time I wanted to make my own mooncakes in Singapore because it’s just such an exciting holiday season with Mid-Autumn Festival around the corner.
And I know from experience that homemade mooncakes taste better than the store-bought ones, so it’s totally worth making the effort! But this time, things didn’t work out quite as I’d hoped.
Filling the mooncake skins
I started by mixing the lotus seed paste and filling each mooncake skin by hand. The process was a bit messy, but I soon got the hang of it. By the end, I had a tray full of beautiful handmade mooncakes.
They looked so different from store-bought ones! My friends agreed that my homemade mooncakes were much better than what they buy from stores. I guess there’s no need to fly to China for authentic handmade mooncakes anymore!
Prepping The Final Mooncakes
I started by making the dough for the mooncakes. I followed a recipe I found online, and it turned out to be pretty straightforward. Then I filled a piping bag with the lotus seed paste filling and cut out small circles of dough.
I wrapped the filling in the dough, molding it into a ball shape. Finally, I brushed the top of each mooncake with some egg wash and put them on a baking sheet.
Then They Broke The Cookie Sheet...
I was so excited to try making handmade mooncakes in Singapore. I followed the recipe to the letter, but when it came time to bake them, they wouldn't fit on the cookie sheet!
I had to improvise and ended up using a makeshift oven. The results were... interesting. Let's just say, I won't be quitting my day job anytime soon.
