If you want a lightweight, wired companion for travel and calls that folds into a pocket, choose Sennheiser HD 400U; if you need marathon battery life, ultra-low latency for gaming or DJing, and high-resolution wireless audio for serious listening sessions, choose OneOdio Studio Max 2.
• Sennheiser HD 400U: Delivers impressive detail with a closed-back design and passive noise cancellation, but sacrifices wireless freedom and modern connectivity features like USB-C charging in favor of a traditional wired experience. Best for travelers and commuters who prioritize portability and call clarity.
• OneOdio Studio Max 2: Offers industry-leading 120-hour battery life, 9ms ultra-low latency, and Hi-Res LDAC audio, yet it is significantly heavier and bulkier than its competitor. Best for DJs, gamers, and studio monitors who demand performance over packability.
• The choice ultimately comes down to whether your priority is a compact, wired setup for daily commutes or a powerful, wireless powerhouse for extended creative and recreational sessions.
The Sennheiser HD 400U is built for the person who values simplicity and portability above all else. Its core identity is defined by a wired connection that eliminates the anxiety of charging cycles or Bluetooth pairing issues. When I look at the specifications, the first thing that stands out is the item weight of just 217 grams. That is remarkably light for an over-ear headphone, suggesting a design philosophy centered on comfort during long wear without the neck strain that heavier models often cause. The construction uses a combination of plastic and fabric materials, which likely contributes to this featherweight feel while maintaining a modern aesthetic.
The closed-back design is not just about style; it serves a functional purpose for those seeking isolation. With passive noise cancellation as its primary method of blocking out the world, this model relies on the physical seal of the ear cushions to reduce background noise. This makes it an excellent candidate for environments where you cannot afford active electronic interference, such as on a train or in a busy office, provided you are willing to deal with a cable. The inclusion of a one-button smart remote on the cable adds a layer of convenience that is often missing from basic wired headphones. You can control music playback and manage calls without reaching for your phone, which is a crucial feature for anyone using these headphones while walking or commuting.

However, this product has clear trade-offs that define who should skip it. The lack of wireless capability means you are tethered to your device. While the headphone jack is listed as USB-C, the connectivity technology is explicitly "Wired," meaning you need a direct physical link. If you are looking for the best active noise cancelling earbuds for exercise because you sweat heavily or move around vigorously, this might not be the ideal fit due to the cable management required. Furthermore, the frequency range spans 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, which is standard for consumer audio, but it lacks the extended high-frequency response found in newer high-resolution standards. If you are an audiophile chasing every nuance in the upper treble or a basshead wanting sub-bass rumble beyond standard limits, you might find the sound signature too conventional. It is a solid, reliable tool for specific tasks, but it is not a general-purpose wireless beast.
The OneOdio Studio Max 2 is engineered for the power user who refuses to compromise on performance or endurance. From the moment you glance at the battery specifications, the intent becomes clear: this is a device built to last. With a claimed playtime of up to 120 hours on a single charge, it obliterates the need for frequent recharging. For someone who forgets to charge their gear or travels for weeks without access to a power outlet, this feature alone changes the equation. The ability to get 9 hours of playback from just a 5-minute charge via USB-C charging further cements its reputation as a workhorse. Whether you are a professional DJ setting up for a multi-day festival or a gamer grinding through long competitive sessions, the "marathon battery" claim translates directly into uninterrupted use.
Audio fidelity is another pillar of this product's identity. The inclusion of the LDAC codec allows for data transmission three times higher than standard Bluetooth, supporting a frequency range that extends up to 40kHz. This Hi-Res audio capability means the custom 45mm High-Flux drivers are capable of revealing layers of sound that standard codecs simply compress away. For musicians, producers, or critical listeners, the difference between standard compression and full-resolution audio is palpable. The 9ms ultra-low latency, achieved through proprietary RapidWill+ 3.0 technology, addresses the most common complaint with wireless audio: lag. In scenarios like video editing, competitive gaming, or live DJ monitoring, even a slight delay can ruin the experience. This specification targets users for whom timing is everything.
Durability and comfort are also front and center here. At 350 grams, this unit is significantly heavier than the Sennheiser option, but the design compensates with soft memory foam earcups and an adjustable headband meant for 8+ hour shifts. The swivel earcups allow for easy on-ear monitoring, a staple feature for professionals. The build materials include leather, metal, and plastic, suggesting a robust chassis capable of withstanding the rigors of frequent travel and handling. However, this robustness comes with a size penalty. The 180-degree swivel and the overall bulk make it less ideal for slipping into a small bag compared to a foldable, lighter alternative. If you are looking for usb c charging headband headphones for exercise, the sheer mass and the over-ear design might feel cumbersome during intense movement, despite the excellent sound isolation and battery life.
• Best for portability and travel → Sennheiser HD 400U. At only 217g and with a folding design, it fits easily into pockets and small bags, making it superior for commuters.
• Best for wireless freedom and battery life → OneOdio Studio Max 2. With 120 hours of playtime and Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity, it offers true untethered usage without constant charging worries.
• Best for latency-sensitive activities → OneOdio Studio Max 2. The 9ms response time is unmatched for gaming, DJing, or video production where synchronization is critical.
• Best for high-resolution audio fidelity → OneOdio Studio Max 2. The support for LDAC and extended frequency range up to 40kHz provides a wider sonic canvas than standard wired sets.
• Best for call management on the go → Sennheiser HD 400U. The dedicated on-cable remote offers immediate access to call controls without needing to interact with a paired device screen.
• Best for durability in heavy-duty environments → OneOdio Studio Max 2. The metal-reinforced build and 2-year warranty suggest a longer lifespan under rigorous professional use.
• Best for passive isolation in quiet modes → Sennheiser HD 400U. The closed-back, fabric-covered design provides a comfortable seal that blocks ambient noise effectively without electronic processing.
• Best for value in features per dollar (implied) → OneOdio Studio Max 2. The combination of Hi-Res audio, low latency, and massive battery capacity offers a more feature-rich package for enthusiasts.
After weighing the distinct strengths of both units, I would personally buy the OneOdio Studio Max 2 for my own daily needs. While the Sennheiser HD 400U is an impressive piece of engineering for its weight and simplicity, the limitations of being wired and lacking advanced audio codecs hold it back in a modern context. The OneOdio Studio Max 2 solves the biggest pain points of wireless audio—battery anxiety and latency—while delivering superior sound quality through LDAC. I recommend the OneOdio Studio Max 2 specifically for anyone using headphones for exercise or gaming, as the wireless freedom combined with the 9ms latency ensures you never miss a beat or trip over a cord. It is the more versatile tool for a dynamic lifestyle.
While both offer sound isolation, the OneOdio Studio Max 2 is better suited for exercise due to its wireless nature and secure fit, whereas the Sennheiser HD 400U's cable can be restrictive during vigorous movement.
The OneOdio Studio Max 2 includes a USB-C charging cable in the box for fast charging, while the Sennheiser HD 400U uses a wired connection that requires a compatible USB-C to 3.5mm or similar adapter depending on your source device.
For professional monitoring and production, the OneOdio Studio Max 2 is the stronger choice thanks to its Hi-Res LDAC support and extended frequency range, providing more detail than the standard frequency response of the Sennheiser model.
At 350 grams, it is heavier than the Sennheiser option, but the memory foam earcups and adjustable headband are designed to distribute that weight comfortably for 8+ hour shifts.
