Dislocations are one-dimensional defects in crystalline materials arising in the presence of a local mismatch in the atomic structure. In this seminar, we will focus on their emergence at the interface between two materials with different atomic spacings, where their formation is associated with a superlinear energy scaling of the form (b+1)log(b), where b measures the mismatch between the two lattice spacings, as predicted by Van der Merwe.
To study this problem, we employ a Lauteri–Luckhaus-type functional with a double-well potential, extending their analysis to this setting. In particular, we recover the Van der Merwe scaling without any a priori assumptions on the geometry of the defects.
A fundamental tool in our analysis is a rigidity inequality in the presence of defects, in the spirit of the one established by Müller, Scardia, and Zeppieri, which we extend to the multiwell case.
This talk is based on joint work with E. Spadaro (Sapienza University of Rome).
The Seminari MAP are a series of seminars organized during the academic year by the PhD students in Analysis and Probability at the University of Pisa and at the Scuola Normale Superiore. The speakers are usually PhD students or young researchers and the talks are devoted not only to professors or researchers, but also to master students interested in the subject. Thus, these seminars are not only focused on the research results, but they are also meant to give the essentially background to students.
