About this resource
This resource is for pre-service teachers, and educators, who have an interest in promoting student self-determination in the ILP process.
This resource is divided into three sections (Why? How? What?).
It begins with an exploration of why we should consider student self-determination in the ILP process. We then look at how we can bring student self-determination to the process by reflecting on the concepts of self advocacy and self-determination. This resource culminates in what a student self-determined ILP process might look like.
What is an ILP?
In Australia, the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the Education Standards) provide a framework to ensure that students with disability can access and participate in education on the same basis as those students without disability. Although individual learning plans (ILPs) are not required by the Education Standards, ILPs or their equivalent are required by every state and territory.
Victoria (VIC)
New South Wales (NSW)
Queensland (QLD)
Western Australia (WA)
Northern Territory (NT)
Tasmania (TAS)
ILPs assist students who require a range of supports with their education. It is a written document that describes the adjustments, goals and strategies to meet a student’s individual educational needs (VIC DET, 2020).
See below for examples of ILPs, including templates, drawn from the WA Department of Education 'Guidelines for Implementing Documented Plans' (2016).
