This policy explains how Selene ("we", "us", "our") collects, processes, and stores personal data when you use the Selene mobile app — an evening AI companion. We act as the Data Controller under the GDPR.
Selene is designed to keep conversations close. By default, your data stays on your device.
Selene can be installed and used without creating an account. We do not require sign-up, email, or phone number.
The following are stored locally on your phone (via the OS's secure preferences storage) and never leave the device unless you choose to export them:
Profile: the name you give yourself during onboarding, join date
Companion settings: chosen personality, voice traits (pace, tone, curiosity)
Conversations (threads): every message you send and Selene's replies
Memories: short reflections Selene saves from conversations (theme, quote, tag, accent)
Mood check-ins: the words, energy level, and sentence you record during nightly check-ins
Streaks: number of nights together
You can view, edit, or delete any of these from inside the app at any time.
When you send a message, the following is transmitted to Google's Gemini API (model: gemini-2.5-flash) over HTTPS to generate a reply:
the text you typed
recent message history from the current thread (up to the last 20 messages)
your companion personality and trait settings (as a system prompt)
We do not transmit your name, profile, memories, or moods to Gemini.
Google's processing of this data is governed by their own privacy terms: policies.google.com/privacy. We do not store your messages on any server we operate — Selene currently has no backend of its own.
When the app contacts Gemini, your device transmits standard request metadata (IP address, timestamp, device OS version) to Google as part of the HTTPS connection. We do not collect, log, or store this data.
Selene does not include any third-party analytics SDK (no Amplitude, Firebase Analytics, Mixpanel, etc.). We do not track screen views, taps, sessions, or any behavioral data.
The voice preview feature on the companion profile screen uses your device's built-in text-to-speech engine. No audio is recorded; no audio is sent off-device.
Inside the app at You → Privacy & memory, you can:
Pause new memories — Selene will keep responding but will save nothing new
Auto-delete memories after 7, 30, 90, or 180 days
Export all memories and threads to your clipboard as JSON
Wipe all memories — irreversible local deletion
You can also delete individual threads (Chat → ⋯ → Delete) or individual memories (Memory → tap a row → Delete).
Selene is a companion, not a clinician. The replies are AI-generated and may be wrong, biased, or off-tone. Selene is not a substitute for professional mental-health care.
If you are in distress, the You → When it gets heavy screen lists free, confidential support lines by region. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
Selene is not intended for users under 13 (or the minimum age set by your local law). We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Any use of your data beyond the purposes described above will be performed only with your prior, explicit consent under GDPR Article 6(1)(a).
Because we do not store user data on our own servers, we have no message content, memory, or profile data to disclose. The only data we could be compelled to produce — app crash reports or developer-account billing records — do not contain user conversations.
You have the right to:
access the personal data we hold about you — for Selene this is everything on your device, viewable in-app
rectify inaccurate data — edit any memory, name, or trait inside the app
erase your data — use Wipe all memories + uninstalling the app removes everything
data portability — use Export all to copy your data as JSON
You do not need to contact us to exercise these rights — the app provides them directly. If you have a question that the in-app controls do not answer, write to us at the contact below.
Data lives on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app. We do not retain copies. If you enable Auto-delete after N days, memories older than the threshold are filtered out and effectively removed.
We may update this policy as Selene evolves (for example, when login, sync, or subscription features ship). The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be announced inside the app.
