I am so excited to have your children back at school and can't wait to see them in the library. When classes visit the library, they will have the opportunity to partake in library skills lessons, curriculum-related support, digital technology lessons tied to the curriculum, and read- alouds.

Parents will be able to stay informed of our library happenings via our monthly newsletter. The newsletter will provide our school community with information pertaining to any previous and upcoming events in our library, information on resources available, as well as up to date library statistics.

Our 13,000+ book collection, 16 iPads, 5 desktop computers are open to students, parents, and community members 7:15am - 3:30pm daily. Classes and individual students visit our library throughout the day to check out books, utilize digital resources, and participate in STEM activities.

After the 7:40 a.m. bell rings, all students must go to their class for the start of the school day. Parents are welcome to stay and check out books after 7:40-8:00 a.m. only, but they must go to the front office and obtain a visitor's pass. This is for the safety of all students/staff on campus.

The only times that the library closes during the day is during the librarian's lunchtime which is 11:30-12:00, and/or during any other time that the library is being used to host special events or when the librarian has other commitments.

The Cole Library prides itself in having the newest releases available by our book vendors in order for our students to have the best literature in their hands. Keeping this in mind, we must have some expectations for our students to abide by in order to ensure that all of our students have the ability to read good quality books.

Please refer to your child's classroom newsletter in order to find out the day your child will be visiting the library so that you may remind your child to make sure to place his/her book in his/her backpack to bring to school.

If a child does not return their library book on their library day, they will not be able to check out a new book during that time. They can, however, come any other day in the morning to return their book and obtain a new one.

Research shows a strong link between children's love of reading and their ability to choose their own reading materials. Self-selection and free choice within our curated, well-maintained collection is so important to our students' reading lives. As library patrons, your child has the ability to select the book he/she wants to read. Having the opportunity to select reading materials is a wonderful experience for all students to have and we want them to enjoy it.

check out (Example: spooky stories, special themes, etc.) make sure that your child is aware of that expectation. Having open discussions at home will prepare your child and also will give them a better understanding of what types of books or topics are acceptable for them to take home. We cannot manage this in the library, and all students have the right to self-select and check out books of their own liking, so having these discussions at home prior to them coming to the library will create a positive library experience.

Calling all Cole Parents!..... We encourage our Cole parents to open up a library account to check out books for their children to read at home. Parents can check out up to five books for a period of up to 2 weeks. Our library prides itself in helping our Cole students and families become lifelong readers.

Our Cole Helpful l Resources Newsletter contains a lot of information for our patrons/families, such as reading websites and databases that can provide additional help in the areas of reading and ELA. The Just Read, Florida! office was tasked in s. 1001.215(8) F.S. to work with the Florida Center for Reading Research to identify scientifically researched and evidenced-based reading instructional and intervention programs that incorporate explicit, systematic and sequential approaches to teaching phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and text comprehension and incorporate decodable or phonetic text instructional strategies.

The resources and review tools provided below include interventions studied by independent clearinghouses that have evaluated the existing research on specific interventions to assist educators in making evidence-based decisions when selecting interventions to support instruction for students that have been identified as needing a tiered system of reading support.

The Reading Program Repository was established to provide a one-stop shop to support Florida Local Education Agencies (LEAs) with being good consumers of research when selecting reading programs that best meet the needs of their students. The collection of reading programs listed in this repository is based on LEA program selections through the High-Quality Reading Curriculum Grant. The Reading Program Repository will continue to expand, including only programs of interest to Florida LEAs. Each of the programs included in the repository have been reviewed by Evidence for ESSA or the What Works Clearinghouse.

This source can be referenced when working to identify the level of evidence found for specific reading intervention programs geared towards elementary students (both for beginning reading and upper elementary reading), students in middle and high school and English Language Learners. For each grade level, you will be able to find program designs, evidence ratings, grade level specific interventions, subgroups and other features. The programs are rated with the required scale of strong, moderate and promising. Programs with limited evidence and programs that were found to have insufficient evidence of effectiveness or had no qualifying studies are also listed.

The What Works Clearinghouse's (WWC's) Find What Works resource allows users to identify interventions, programs, policies and practices that have been shown to have a positive impact on student outcomes.

This roadmap was developed by the Regional Educational Laboratory Southeast in collaboration with the Institute of Education Sciences to help state education agencies (SEAs) and local education agencies (LEAs) implement evidence-based literacy practices.

The mission of the Sunset Elementary Library is to develop a community of lifelong readers. Our library provides reading material that reflects inclusion, equality, and community. The library serves as a welcome space, encouraging students to access information and develop curiosity based on the ability to self-select reading materials, to create, build and gather in makerspace.

The librarian and the School Committee strive to have a library collection that all students and parents consider appropriate. Nevertheless, the District recognizes the right of parents under state law and District Policy 11IR-107 Recognizing Constitutional Freedoms in Public Schools, to restrict their child's access to materials the parent deems inappropriate. However, parents do not have the right to make that determination on behalf of other parents and students.

A parent desiring to restrict their own child's access to specific library material shall submit the request in writing (or via email) to the Librarian at the school their child is currently attending. If the material is a required part of the classroom curriculum activities, the parent must follow the procedures for waiver contained in 11IR-107 Section 14.

Makers Space in the library: Students are invited to attend Makers Space in the library during their lunch recess. Students have an opportunity to learn new skills Friday afternoons, such as finger crocheting and paper folding. The Makers Space includes games such as checkers, chess, connect four, tangoes & rush hour traffic jam. Stem kits include construction engineering building blocks, build your own racecar set, circuit learning kit, Lego chain reaction kit, K'NEX lever & pulleys kit, and a magnetic tile kit. Crafting supplies are also available. All students using the Makers Space must follow library rules and expectations.

The Library Media DESK focuses and prioritizes the reading and information literacy skills that students need to know and be able to use to help them read and research effectively in all subjects and with a variety of technologies. 152ee80cbc
