Arboreal Growth Through Movement
pieces together the surrounding environment rich in trees and foliage.
Directly above this platform is an open skylight that provides an isolated view of the overhead canopy formed by the trees.
By framing specific views, the form of this observatory follows its function. Its general shape mimics the topography of the land and the interior features a central platform designed to guide the user on a circular path of movement.Â
The series of twisted surfaces that form the walls and meet at the overhead ring creates the impression of a fan. You are meant to move, feel the movement, and be curious while doing so.
The process for this semester-long observatory project began with studies of designated "territories," or areas, within Forest Park in St. Louis. I was interested in capturing the latent qualities of growth and movement within the territory. The fanning of movement around a focal point became the foundational idea behind my design.
