The rise of the graphic novel has shown that comics aren't just comics any longer. Whether one thinks graphic novels are just comics-on-steroids or a new medium on its own behalf, the expansive growth of such picture books is undeniable. But what does it take to make a Great Flemish Graphic Novel? What should be its volume, its topic, its shape, its style? Or does it already exist? Guest editors Patrick Bassant and Sébastien Conard invited young artists and more established ones alike, scholars, and writers from both linguistic communities in Belgium and from the Netherlands to creatively and critically tackle these questions.
