Apple cider
Update April 2020
40 years ago, between the age of 9 and 12, I stayed regularly at my "muttti", a sort of grandmother in Germany. She had been trough the war. She did or made everything herself, had a vegetable garden, fruit and walnut trees and a gigantic cellar full of preserving jars. It would take at least two years, on her own, for everything to run out, she said, showing how she worked. She also made apple cider
Recently I saw a dutch consumer program "Inspection service of Value"( Dutch: Keuringsdienst van Waarde - Jan 14, 2020) where apple ciders were investigated. Although 200 varieties are recognized as cider varieties, although there are no rules what you are allowed to call apple cider. In some company factories, people start with apple concentrate, a thickened apple juice made from apples imported from Poland, Germany or Austria, among others. Aromas are added later. These aromas are captured during the process of evaporating apple juice, to make apple concentrate. It is basically a mixed drink
Got to love this company ..

They visit Burrow Hill Cider & the Somerset Cider Brandy Company in South East England. Here they make original cider from bittersweet 'Yarlington Mill' apples with high tannin and sugar content. One tree = 300 liters or 600 bottles. I quote: "farm cider is pure juice". This is pressed, using an old-fashioned water mill - and fermented in old oak barrels. Nothing is added. Unfortunately Burrow Hill cider is not sold in my city. I did find a similar product of Dutch origin: Bear Cider from a village named Beerze, province of Overijssel, the Netherlands. 5% alcohol, "original cloudy" and a price of 2.40 euro for 33 cl. It was tasty, but, seriously, does it have to cost 2 euro 40 ?.
