It started when a pair of Western Gulls broke into a Long Call Duet. Standing close together, they bowed their heads down once toward the pavement and then stretched their necks out at a 45-degree upward angle for the rest of the call:

Immediately, both birds transitioned into a slow series of long, rising wails, much like the sounds of a peacock, as they strutted around the parking lot in parallel, necks fully extended, bills pointed downward:

My original hypothesis was that I was observing courtship behavior, but this may actually have been an aggressive territorial encounter, perhaps between two males. All of these displays are used in both aggression and in courtship.

Supporting the courtship hypothesis is the fact that this duetting pair never resorted to fighting. When a third bird arrived, one of the displaying pair fought it off, while the other member of the pair looked on in agitation, giving a very long Long Call sequence. When the third bird was driven off, the pair display resumed immediately between what I took to be the original two birds.

Gulls of several species have been reported to defend winter feeding territories, and that could have been what these birds were doing. Perhaps a local breeder was fending off an interloper in search of winter turf.

Great post as always! This one has some really useful information for all of us who have been struggling to decipher gull sounds. I learned about the alarm chuckle the hard way, walking underneath a Herring Gull on a lamppost, staring down at me and giving this call, just before dive bombing me repeatedly.

Which type of Merlin sounds better? I wanted to see if there was a notable sound difference between the two different types of wood tops -- spruce or mahogany -- used in constructing the Seagull Merlin dulcimer. So I did a quick run through on each version to see if I could tell, and sure enough, there is!!

I wanted to bring out two of the Merlin stick dulcimers these are from Seagull up in Canada this one's the mahogany top, this one is the spruce top. Do a quick sound check between the two of them. For this I have unplugged the microphone from the camera so that hopefully we can get a pretty equal sound between them.

If you've never played an instrument before and this is your first time out, I really suggest you just go with the thing you think looks the coolest to you. Honestly, if you like the way that it looks you're more likely to play, and that's the most important thing right now. But if you are accustomed to playing guitar or have other stick dulcimers and you're looking for the difference between the two, my take on it is that this one is a slightly warmer sound.

This soundscape was originally recorded en route towards Cape Clear Island. It is the first soundscape of a series. Our destination is a well preserved spot in Ireland, and I will be carrying my recording equipment with me. The seagull effect was first used during a mid section in the unreleased Embryo back in February 1970, but later found its way into Echoes during recording sessions in early 1971, as Riis explained. The shrill noise mimicking a seagull scream was repeated later on in 1979., in the song "Is There Anybody Out There?" from the Pink Floyd album The Wall.

Although it might seem like the effect was add on or played on the synth, Gilmour was using only his instruments in pairs with his superb creativity. According to Gilmourish.com, he was using a clean amp, vintage circuit wah-wah pedal and the Binson Echorec.

The guitar top is the part of the instrument that most affects the sound. Slightly arching the top above the sound hole resists downward pressure created by the fingerboard and increases the structural integrity of the top and allows for the use of a thinner and more lightly braced top. The compound curve top produces excellent stability in the upper part of the guitar top and the power & projection made possible by leaving the top flat below the sound hole. This area around the bridge is the most active part of the top in regards to vibration.

The bracing for the new Seagull guitars is quarter-sawn Sitka spruce, scalloped and carved to conform exactly to the curvature of the tops. The strength and lightweight qualities of Sitka Spruce make for ideal bracing material. Both Cedar and Spruce share the same virtues in terms of better sound and the ability to age. Cedar tends to produce a warmer sound and ages faster than spruce. Spruce is brighter and ages moreover a longer period of time. Visually, cedar is darker in color with a fairly tight grain pattern.
