sdOB12 will take place at Wildacres, an isolated retreat center in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, USA. All sdOB12 delegates should stay on-site at Wildacres lodges; there are no other housing options. (The only exception would be delegates with a vehicle who choose to stay in a hotel/inn or campsite down the mountain in a neighboring village and drive up to Wildacres each morning/evening.) Wildacres has two lodges that contain a total of 56 rooms. Each room has two twin-size beds, a small private bathroom (toilet, shower), and an open sink/vanity area just outside the bathroom. There are no televisions or telephones in the rooms. There is a large meeting room on the lower level of each lodge. There are a limited number of rooms available at Wildacres, and so we strongly encourage graduate and undergraduate students to share rooms, if possible. You can mark roommate preferences on the Registration Form.
PRICING:
Wildacres is an all-inclusive retreat center and the only option for lodging & food on the mountain. Wildacres staff requires that both delegates and accompanying persons each make a payment for lodging+food. As such, they do not charge per room, but per person. There are four different fixed rates for sdOB12, depending on how many nights a delegate stays and whether a single room (i.e., not sharing a room with anyone) or a double room (i.e., sharing a room with someone) is booked. Wildacres does not prorate costs for shorter stays.

CHECK-IN / CHECK-OUT:
Guest rooms are available for check-in each day at 16:00. The earliest possible (and recommended) day for check-in is Monday, May 19th. If you arrive to Wildacres on Monday, May 19th, before 16:00, you will have to wait outside or in the common area of one of the lodges until 16:00 check-in.
Delegates may check out as early in the morning as they like on the day of their departure. No late checkouts are available. All delegates must be completely out of their individual rooms no later than 9:30 am on Sunday, May 25. This allows Wildacres housekeeping staff to begin cleaning for the next group.
All delegates must leave the Wildacres premises by 12:00 on Sunday, May 25.
WHAT TO BRING / WHAT TO EXPECT:
The weather/temperature at Wildacres (elevation 1006 m, or 3300 ft) can be unpredictable in late May. The average high temperature in late May is 23°C (73.4°F), and the average low temperature is 11°C (51.8°F). Bringing layers to accommodate the changes in temperature is a good idea. There is limited air conditioning in Wildacres facilities, so if the temperatures are abnormally warm during sdOB12, some of the rooms could get warm.
Wildacres is not a "dress up place" so bring casual clothes. Include a jacket, sweater, and comfortable walking shoes. Much of the property is hilly and comfortable shoes will make a difference. We will spend some time outside during the evenings (around the campfire, etc.).
Lost and Found – If you find an item someone lost, turn it in at the front desk. If you lose an item during sdOB12, check the front desk for it. Unclaimed items are donated to a local shelter after 14 days.
Smoking/vaping is not permitted indoors at the retreat center. Smoking/vaping is permitted outdoors - with the exception of on the patio between the lodges. We ask that guests wishing to smoke be aware of drifting smoke and stay away from locations where smoke can drift in open windows or doors.
