Hello everyone! I hope everyone had a good week. This week was the 11th week of me being the SCUA Processing intern! I had a very busy week! Starting off, we had no readings this week! The last two readings are for next week, so it’s just another reminder of how little time I have left. Either way, my supervisor, Arielle, and I talked about what I should do with my outreach project. We both agreed that I should change the back of the matching cards, which was nice because I liked it but I didn’t know how to make it better. We also talked about me working on a new collection, which I started on Tuesday! It’s the Global Perspective Collection, which is 16 boxes of VHS tapes, CD’s, printed presentations, books, newspapers, and three awards! It’s a really big collection, but I believe I can finish it before the end of the semester.
On Tuesday, I started working on going through and cataloging what is in the collection. I do this before I start the processing plan worksheet, so I can make the series and subseries without having to add or take away anything that I might’ve already planned out. This doesn’t always work out, but cataloging what is in each box and collection is the best way I have tried to start a collection. It took me all day Tuesday and most of Wednesday to go through everything in the half boxes, and I still haven’t gone through some of the loose materials, specifically the newspapers, to know what is in there and where. During the last few hours I was there on Wednesday, I started sorting through the vhs tapes and trying to figure out how I wanted to store them. I was afraid to start the CD’s or the printed presentations, because while going through them I had figured out that some of the presentations were titled the same as some of the CD’s. I still don’t want to touch it.
On Thursday, I kept working through the vhs tapes. I also finished the processing plan worksheet for this collection and started doing some background research of some of the names that kept popping up throughout the collection. I also sorted through the books, it only took up a single box, and I looked through some of the newspapers. Arielle told me to find the articles in them that related to the collection, and then cut them out to keep with the collection. I know I went through quite a bit on Thursday, but it doesn’t feel like it because I only sorted 6 of the 16 boxes so far.
Anyways, thanks for reading!! I hope you all have a good week!
