978-1635921380, $14.99 Hardback

The book is beautiful, the entire design is gorgeous. Also, the book is about providing positive affirmations for children about their skin color. For those readers that don’t understand why this is important, read the author’s note first before you read the book. Brown Sugar Babe takes children on a mystic journey and shows them why brown skin color is just as special as any other skin color. Furthermore, the author’s note makes it clear that there is still work to be done to neutralize prejudice, discrimination, and segregation that is creating a feeling of inferiority among African American children that was documented in the “doll test” of the 1940’s. Unfortunately, similar results were obtained in the 21st Century.

Cameron's Dream-★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Tryfaith Publishing

978-0999108901, $24.99 Hardback

Cameron’s Dream is very special for so many reasons. First, I was recently at a spring fling where I was selling African American children books. As I talked to a customer, I noticed that most of the books that I was selling was about girls. More than anything, there are very few books on the market about African American boys. This is one reason this book needs to be in your collection. Second, I think that the book can help boys show their emotions, which may help some Black males avoid depression, which is slowly becoming an epidemic in the United States. Also, the next time you are in Barnes and Nobles stroll through the Children's Book section. Check out books that are like Cameron’s dream.

I Scream Because I"m Angry-★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Erica N. Worhterly's

Amazon

978-1933518435, $9.68 Paperback

Erica Wortherly’s book reminds me of a scene from a TV show, My Wife and Kids. In this particular show Junior, played by George Gore II, sings a rap song, I’m angry for no reason at all. I think that many kids feel this way. More importantly, I Scream Because I’m Angry might be able to help kids understand their anger. In addition, the author provides extensive techniques for kids to help neutralize the anger they experience.

Your own kind of Wonderful-★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Tamara Pray Frazier

Julian's Legacy Publishers

Amazon

978-0578488486, $10.24 Paperback

At one of my daughter's birthday parties there were girls from different races- African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic. During the celebration they created an activity on the kitchen table; I don’t quite remember the exact craft. As the girls completed the art, I overheard the Hispanic girl say to herself, “I’m ugly.” I lifted my head and looked at her and thought to myself, she is one of the prettiest girls in the house. Yet, I had to remember that this American society does a doozy on the self-esteem of girls of color. Tamara Fraizer’s Your Own Kind of Beautiful is a good antidote for some of the messages of western society that undermine the dignity of women of color.

The Adventures of cali & BJ ★ ★ ★

Kierra Douglass

Amazon

978-1718121027, $12.95 Paperback

Too many kids that are being bullied are suffering in silence. Luckily for Cali she has BJ, her brother, in The Adventures of cali & BJ to help her with a bully. Yet, so often kids don’t have anybody to help them. That’s why this book is important, it shows how they can get help if they are being bullied. For example, Cali uses the Anti Bully App to report a bully to the principal anonymously, a real app that will be available in the Apple store soon. In addition, most schools have a link on their website or phone numbers where students can report bullying. Finally, I like the fact the book has the family sit down and talk about how to combat bullying too. I think that kids that read the book will feel that they can go to their parents with bullying, seek help from those who are closest to them.

Love, Grandma-★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Ann Morris

Mascot Books

$11.35, Hardback

Love grandma reminds me of how grandmothers like to play with their grand kids. I think that the grandmother in the book gets more out of playing than the children. This is probably true in real life too.
