Plastic litter in macrophyte system: environmental fate and ecological implications
SCARP is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie project that uncovers what really happens to plastic litter trapped in coastal seaweed beds. We trace how microplastics move between algae, surrounding sediments and the food web, and test how plastic particles and their leachates affect seaweed health, nutrient cycling and habitat resilience.
Field survey & sampling: Map and sample seaweed-borne plastics.
Fate of microplastics: Track microplastic movement and sinks.
Plant physiology: Test seaweed stress responses.
Ecological functions: test ecosystem-level impacts
