"I have nothing to gain by ruining Mr. Hamilton's reputation. I am already in a position of power and an obedient servant of Jefferson, Burr, and Madison. Like you, I am not entirely convinced that the pamphlet in question is legitimate. When I took office, Hamilton gave me all of his former ledgers. However, about two years ago I noticed this 1794 Calvary expense ledger which looks to have been altered. I am unsure of who would want to do such a thing.
