Scots’ Gap Campsite
Sawmill Campsite at Scots’ Gap is a small (6 acre) campsite run by the City of Newcastle District Scout Council, in a beautiful part of Northumberland. The land has been rented from the National Trust for over 40 years with the aim of providing a facility for Scouts and other youth groups to learn and develop their basic camping skills in an enjoyable and pleasant environment.
There are two camping areas surrounded by trees. The Delf Burn flows down the west side of the site. The facilities are intentionally simple as a back to basics campsite and in Scout Association terms, it is designated as a greenfield campsite or a campsite, if toilets are required. Mains water, paved fireplace areas, flagpole, urinal screen and Elsan pit are provided.
The site is available for groups, such as:
Scout Association
Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Groups

A great site we used it as part of the county D of E weekend supporting 70 young people through their expedition the site was clean and tidy and the grass was cut nice and short with more than enough space.
We used the campsite for the overnight stops for a DofE expedition and it is ideal. Plenty of space, peace and quiet and no frills. The site is beautifully kept with the grass nicely cut and clean and tidy.
SO good to be back camping after far too long away. Sawmill Campsite was the perfect location for our weekend camp. Our scouts thoroughly enjoyed the field, the woods and the stream. The campfire circle was perfect – even in the rain – and the ready-made fire pits allowed the scouts to cook and socialise around the fires – and there is plenty of wood on site. All in all a wonderful weekend camp – and a site we’ll definitely use again.
We used Scots Gap for our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition overnight - it is an ideal site for this type of activity which gives the Scouts the illusion of wild camping in a very safe environment. It is a fantastic site and we are now looking to come back for more camps here.
This is a fantastic site, with lots of options for the young people. We have used Sawmill Campsite for a variety of different camps (with young people from different sections), and also for day events! Our young people have enjoyed each event that we have hosted here, and we are grateful to the Scots’ Gap team of whom are friendly and accommodating!
It's an amazing site, the walks available around the area are not too difficult and have some amazing views. We come here as often as possible as it is truly an amazing place and not too far travel from Newcastle. It's well kept and safe for any section to have a great day or weekend away from the city.
A collection of photos after the damage to our site. We are working hard to try and restore Scots' Gap to its former glory.
