What can photos from the past tell us?
Learning intention – We are examining old photographs to learn about the past.
Success criteria – We can describe what we see in a photograph and state ideas about its setting and purpose.

Answer the See-Think-Wonder questions for at least two of the photos.
You could work in Jigsaw groups. Examine one photo each and share your work.

Step into the photo
In groups, choose a photograph from above or a school photo from your school's past.
What costumes and props do you need to recreate the photo?
Copy the poses of the students in the photo.
Take a photo and check it looks the same.
What might have been happening just before the photo was taken? Act it out.
Hot seat
Individually or in pairs:
Choose one or two students from one of the photographs.
Imagine the person's name and age.
Pretend to be the person – what are they doing, seeing, hearing, feeling, thinking?
Invite the audience to ask questions to find out about the person.
1943 aerial photographs
Use SIX Maps to examine your school and local area in 1943.
It was wartime then and aerial photographs were taken of all of Greater Sydney.

What can you discover about your school and local area?
The only school buildings in 1943 are the four rooms of what is now the Schoolhouse Museum. The 1877 teacher's house is on the left. The old St John's Church is on the right.
