Mental Health and Stress Relief

Mental Health

  • Mental health is an essential part of children's overall health
  • Half of all lifetime cases of mental disorders begin by the age of 14

Ways to develop healthy self-esteem for your child:

  1. Provide genuine, realistic praise
  2. Give opportunities for independence
  3. Help your child develop healthy self-talk
  4. Encourage your child to develop new skills
  5. Be a good role model

  • Reach out to our school guidance if your child exhibits a need for emotional support (Ms. Kellie Hankinson, IU8 Guidance Counselor; hankinson.kellie@divinemercy.academy)
  • For immediate health services, contact the Behavioral Health Services of Johnstown at (814) 266-8840 or your pediatrician

Stress Relief for Kids

  • Deep breathing exercises and fun 'brain breaks' are great ways for children to de-stress
  • Have an overall stress reducing plan to keep future stress under control

A complete stress reducing plan includes:

  1. Positive mental times
  2. Physical activity
  3. Sleep
  4. A regular routine

  • Deep breathing= relax the body and mind; choose a quiet spot to sit; breathe while counting to three
  • Fun 'brain breaks'= lower stress during study sessions; listen to three favorite songs; complete jumping jacks or dance to get you or your child's blood pumping
