Highlighting the growing urgency of environmental concerns, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Dr M Jagadesh Kumar unveiled the latest edition of the book Environmental Studies: From Crisis to Cure, published by Oxford University Press India. Authored by Prof R Rajagopalan, a former professor at IIT Madras, the book is a bestseller and is widely regarded as a fundamental resource for environmental studies.
New Delhi, Nov 5 (PTI) Updated with latest reports, UGC guidelines and curriculum framework for environment education in 2023, the new edition of bestselling "Environmental Studies: From Crisis to Cure" by professor R Rajagopalan has hit the stands, announced publishing house Oxford University Press (OUP) on Sunday.
The book, now in its fourth edition, seeks to reshape how students discern and engage with the environment. It was developed under the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
It focuses on climate change as the most significant challenge of our times and includes new content on topics such as climate adaptation, circular economy, disaster management, and the government's 'Lifestyle for the Environment' (LIFE) movement, which aims to promote environmental awareness.
"At OUP, we are committed to raising awareness about social and environmental issues among learners and researchers worldwide. We aim to harness the power of publishing to educate future generations, promote critical thinking and informed decision-making, and drive positive, long-lasting change.

The updated edition, recently released by University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Jagadesh Kumar, illustrates various problems, solutions, successes, and failures through over 80 real-life case studies from India and around the world.
Also, following the guidelines of NEP 2020, the main text employs the Socratic method in a question-answer format. The chapters in the book also shed light on how students can positively impact the environment through group projects, initiating their organisations, and undertaking personal initiatives.
On June 5, 2023, UGC released the guidelines and curriculum framework for environmental education in undergraduate courses whereby it directed all undergraduate programmes in Higher Education Institution (HEIs) to include this course.
The guidelines are designed to cater to students from all disciplinary backgrounds and to sensitise them about India's commitment to achieving sustainable development goals and resolving global environmental concerns.

Shifting resources and funding from institutionalized care for those with mental illness to community-based care has shown promise for behavioral health parity in health crisis circumstances and yet, it has been underfunded. One of the unfortunate trends of deinstitutionalization of behavioral health services in general has been a persistent gap in emergency crisis services. This gap in services leaves those in a behavioral health crisis to receive treatment in the Hospital Emergency Departments culminating in an astounding increase in overall healthcare expenditures. Providing behavioral health crisis assessment and treatment in busy emergency departments that produce long waits for care can be a challenging environment for those in need of immediate treatment for psychological needs. Crisis Stabilization Centers are effective at providing suicide prevention services, addressing behavioral health treatment, diverting individuals from entering a higher level of care and addressing the distress experienced by individuals in a behavioral health crisis. Studies also show that the cost of Crisis Stabilization Centers is significantly less than psychiatric inpatient units and satisfaction among clients is greater. Expanding the options for Behavioral Health Crisis Care from community-based behavioral health out-patient care and inpatient care to various community alternatives, benefits individuals in crisis as well as the community. This article provides an overview of community alternatives to psychiatric hospitalization, financial barriers to care and future research.

Humankind is confronted with progressing climate change, pollution, environmental degradation, and/or destruction of the air, soil, water, and ecosystems. The climate and environmental crisis is probably one of the greatest challenges in the history of humankind. It not only poses a serious current and continuing threat to physical health, but is also an existing and growing hazard to the mental health of millions of people worldwide. This synergy of literature provides a current summary of the adverse mental health impacts of the climate and environmental crisis from the perspective of Clinical Psychology. Furthermore, it presents potential underlying processes, including biological, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and social pathways. The existing data suggest that the climate and environmental crisis not only acts as a direct stressor, but can also exert a detrimental impact on the various pathways, with the potential to amplify an individual's biopsychosocial vulnerability to develop mental ill-health. This is a call for an increased investigation into this emerging research field of Clinical Ecopsychology by clinical psychologists and other researchers.

More than a million additional people in North America are expected to die from opioid overdose by the end of the decade.22 This crisis can only be addressed by cooperation at all levels of government and society and will be worsened by fearmongering about immigration and political inaction on credible solutions. A whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach is needed at the national, state, and local levels to address the opioid epidemic by addressing the root causes of drug use, expanding access to addiction treatment and harm reduction strategies, and reducing the supply of illicit opioids entering the United States.
A recent analysis found that federal prosecutions and convictions for drug-related crimes, particularly those involving methamphetamines and fentanyl, are on the rise under the Biden administration34 after record lows under the prior administration.35 This is because federal prosecutors have shifted their focus from offenses involving marijuana to offenses involving controlled substances such as methamphetamines and fentanyl. In 2018, fentanyl-related convictions were rare, with only 63 being reported.36 Yet during the first half of 2023, they reached more than 1,200.37 Overdoses have also continued to rise to record highs,38 demonstrating that the increased focus on law enforcement solutions alone is not enough to address a worsening public health crisis.
Local jurisdictions can also work to build trust between law enforcement and their communities by adopting community responder programs where specialized response teams are dispatched to substance abuse crisis calls.134 Police are often relied on to respond to crisis situations outside of their area of expertise, which can delay or even deny individuals from receiving proper care and treatment and might ultimately lead to worse outcomes, such as an arrest or fatality at the hands of police.
