What are Little Libraries?
As vessels of the larger national effort to bring accessible literature to students everywhere, "Free Little Libraries" follow the "take one, leave one" code, where users can take, donate, and swap reading materials at no charge. Here, any level of literature can be traded - from picture books to full length chapter series.
Located in decorated cubbies, the books are housed in what is literally a "little" library, like the ones from Arizona, New York, and the even South Pole shown below! Little Library-affiliated charters have now landed in over 108 countries worldwide, and number in the hundred-thousands. A new chartered library can be opened any day!
About Us
Salisbury Little Libraries strives to engage the SBY area through literature! The goal of this project on a regional scale is to make reading materials accessible to young learners around the city. By expanding the already massive network of little libraries across the country, readers in Salisbury have the opportunity to enhance skills and quench curiosity through local, free literature!
Tasked with creating a project to engage the community, SU students Elliana Larsen, Danielle Olenchak, Riley Craney, and Sarah Kutchey have worked alongside this network of Little Libraries, and with local educators, to offer new and exciting resources to readers within the community. A prime motivator for this project was the ongoing COVID pandemic, and thus the limited school and library resources for still-developing learners. By broadcasting the already-in-place web of Little Libraries paired with social media read-alongs, this project takes action in a time where many students unfortunately are not involved in traditional a learning experience. Even in an educationally virtual environment, the accessibility that this project offers between reading materials and guided read-alongs will be impactful in the community.
