Policy on Access to Band-Owned Lands

Policy-relevant urban health research generates knowledge that policy- and decision-makers can use to improve health and reduce health inequities. Through its Salud Urbana en Amrica Latina (SALURBAL) project, The Urban Health Network for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC-Urban Health) promotes urban health research and the translation of scientific evidence into real-world solutions.

Urban areas across Latin America face increasing health impacts from climate change. This brief describes what we know about the current and future impacts of climate change on health and health equity, what some cities in Latin America are doing to maximize the co-benefits of climate action, and what urban policymakers and public health researchers can do to support effective urban policies and interventions. (April 2022)

How can urban health research drive the development of evidence-based policies? Knowledge to Policy Translation for Urban Health: Lessons from Latin American Cities explores how knowledge about the links between urban environments and health can inform action to promote urban health and health equity and contribute to environmental sustainability.

The document reviews challenges and opportunities related to knowledge to policy translation for urban health in Latin America and presents concrete actions for improving how the research community engages with policymakers and other actors. (February 2020)

Health in All Urban Policies: Lessons from Latin American Cities outlines the core principles of a Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach to understanding how urban environments affect health, and how urban policies and interventions across sectors can impact the health of people living in cities. This policy brief was co-produced by the SALURBAL project in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and describes initiatives by each organization to advance HiAP implementation. The 12-page booklet provides an introduction to key concepts related to HiAP, research and evidence to support this approach, and recommendations for policymakers and for the academic community for leveraging action across sectors to promote health, equity, and environmental sustainability. (October 2019)

Food and Urban Health: Lessons from Latin America presents leading challenges in urban nutrition in the context of demographic changes, poverty, and markets and regulations. The policy brief describes mechanisms that can be implemented to affect food-related behaviors and consumption, and highlights innovative policies, laws, and programs from the region. Recommendations build upon best regional practices and suggest integrated and intersectoral responses. (May 2018)

Sustainable Transport and Urban Health: Lessons from Latin America explores strategies and interventions from throughout the region that support active transport and mobility in cities. The policy brief gives an overview of the key areas of transportation policies, regional trends, case studies of policies in major cities, and discusses the contributions of Latin America to global efforts in urban policies and health. (Nov. 2017)

For Europe and LAC countries, achieving mutually beneficial outcomes will require a new mindset. Both regions need to be aligned in terms of policy choices to achieve sustainable economic growth and reduce GHG emissions. Importantly, outcomes will not only depend on choices by single governments but also on the extent to which these decisions will be collectively taken.

The law change in Minnesota is estimated to affect more than 55,000 people still serving some stage of a sentence outside a jail or prison wall. And voting rights groups have spent months raising awareness about the policy and encouraging Minnesotans to register to vote once they become eligible.

The Centre for Excellence in Finance hosted the afternoon panels on artificial intelligence and feminist foreign policy (FFP). The panel on FFP opened with a video address by Tanja Fajon, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs: "I firmly believe that by strategically addressing the structural barriers to gender equality, positive and lasting change can be achieved, not only for women and girls, but also for society as a whole". She added that the priorities of Slovenia's foreign policy are to make further progress on gender equality, the protection of women's rights and the empowerment of women. To this end, the MFEA is developing a national feminist foreign policy strategy. The panel, which included FFP ambassadors and representatives from the foreign ministries of Argentina, Colombia and the Netherlands, as well as the presidents of the EU-LAC Foundation and the Foundation for Studies and Research on Women (FEIM), discussed the main challenges in developing national feminist foreign policies and presented some good practices.

Substantively, the report identifies three major knowledge gaps, stemming from changing local, national and global conditions confronting the coming commodity boom that differ from the contexts of previous booms. First, changes in the structure of the global economy and supply chains for transition materials present challenges for LAC countries with varying technical, financial and policy capacities. Second, these new supply chains and extractive patterns necessitate new governance frameworks for LAC countries to achieve development goals while mitigating social and environmental risks. Third, LAC states must coordinate between a plethora of external stakeholders, including the Chinese government, Chinese commercial actors, Western-led and Southern-led multilateral development banks (MDBs), national development banks (NDBs) and Western private investors, each with their own expertise and interests.

The Working Group recommends pursuing research that evaluates the conditions under which policy lessons from previous booms apply in the context of new supply chains and governance arrangements, that identifies more specific policies and institutional capacities to best mitigate overlapping types of risks and that maps various stakeholders and their incentives at the local, national and regional levels.

A policy-oriented research agenda that examines the structural factors affecting market conditions, the governance challenges for development and risk mitigation and the shifting roles of external stakeholders requires global collaboration. Research must bridge disciplinary boundaries between political science, economics, environmental sciences, firm behavior and other disciplines. It must incorporate cross-regional expertise from both LAC and China-based research. Finally, it must apply the tools of rigorous empirical investigation to answer questions generated by policymakers and communicate its findings to governments, inter-governmental organizations and non-governmental organizations to implement research-backed solutions. 17dc91bb1f
