Our aim: through the promotion of de-escalation strategies and the reduction of risk and restraint, to support teaching, learning and caring, by increasing staff confidence and competence, in responding to behaviours that challenge, whilst promoting and protecting positive relationships. Our results: Team - Teach training has received the highest level of award in the U.K - a National Training Award - This government supported award is presented to entries who have demonstrated exceptional achievement through training and development. Judges were impressed by the support infrastructure and the robust quality control and assurance processes. They observed that it was a clearly needed service and its innovative approaches have delivered significant benefits to schools/services and local authorities/employers. Dr Sarah Evans of the University of Wales conducted a project (November 2014) evidencing the benefits of Team Teach training: " When assessing students there was a clear improvement in behaviour management techniques.. All participants were awarded certification which enhances their CV and can enable them to work in more challenging / vulnerable settings, with an increased awareness of the legal framework and apply appropriate de-escalation... When observed both formatively and summatively, students have increased skills in behaviour management in professional settings.."

Best practice in this area is achieved through a whole staff training approach, actively supported and attended by senior leadership and management; where everybody hears the key messages at the same time and are on the "same page" with regard to knowing what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour and with regard to the latter, how to respond in a way that is more likely to de-escalate a situation.

Therefore, our preferred and recommended training model, providing the highest level of safeguarding, is for all staff to receive training:

Option 1 : a 6 hour "Foundation" course (to reduce foreseeable low "mainstream" risk),

Option 2: a 12 hour "Basic" course (to reduce foreseeable medium "special service" risk) and where supported through evidenced health and safety needs, additional advanced modules (to reduce foreseeable elevated risk).

For large groups of staff in mainstream services, it is possible for a smaller cohort of 12 or 24 participants (including representation from leadership and management) to be trained in "Option 1" above and then at least two individuals attending this Foundation training, able to progress on to the 5 day intermediate trainer course.

This trainer certificate would then permit them to train and refresh their own staff. See course booking link for details about the Foundation and intermediate trainer course. Staff working with, or in, special needs settings, should complete the 2 day Basic course.

These "special" settings should have access to their own "in house" trainers. All techniques have undergone (2006, 2009, 2012 and 2015) a medical risk assessment review, carried out by independent experts..
