Sazaedo is located in Aizu, Fukushima Prefecture; the Wooden Buddhist temple designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1995. The height is 16.5 meters, and the shape is hexagonal, similar to the shell of a horned turban, sazae.
Sazaedo was constructed in 1796 by a monk named Ikudo. At that time, it was almost impossible for citizens in Aizu to visit the famous 33 Kannons on the western side of Japan. Ikudo collected all the Kannons at the same place in Aizu Sazaedo so that people can easily visit. In the 1780s, some other Sazaedos were constructed all over Japan to enclose Kannons in the same place so they could be visited simultaneously. Those Sazaedos have a different structure from the Sazaedo in Aizu, which is square and has plain floors. The original building of Aizu Sazaedo was removed after the Meiji Restoration because of Shinbutsu Bunri: the separation of Shinto from Buddhism. In 1890, the statue of 19 soldiers in Byakkotai, 16 to 17-year-old teenagers who fought in the Boshin war and committed suicide, was established in place of the original building. Now, a picture frame compiled by Matsudaira Katataka, the 8th feudal lord.
Inside Sazaedo is a steep, one-way slope, a double-helix structure where visitors do not pass each other. The structure is similar to the Château de Chambord in France, which Leonardo da Vinci designed. Visitors make three turns by going up and down inside the Sazaedo, and they can visit 33 Kannons. By praying, visitors can earn a good fortune. The temple’s walls and ceilings are covered by stickers with names called senjafuda, which visitors place as proof of their visitation.
