Electronics Recycling

PA Device Recycling Act

This PA Law went into effect January 1st, 2012 and essentially bans e-waste into landfills and waste-to-energy. Therefore, your trash service provider is not able to accept those items. E-waste contains various heavy metals that become an environmental hazard and in landfills and waste-to-energy plants, heavy metals could potentially contribute to groundwater or air pollution.

The law stipulates that manufacturers of electronics are responsible for proper recycling effort, however there is no enforcement or incentives, as a result, recycling events and opportunities are not widespread. E-waste and unwanted electronics continue to build in our homes and businesses.

SAVE recommends calling your local Representative to express your concern with the current ineffectiveness of this law in hopes for future reform.
