Dr. Sathya D. (Sathya Dhatchanamoorthy) is primarily a social historian specialised in colonial history and is currently pursuing her postdoctoral work in interdisciplinary research on mental health history with Dr. Sudarshan R. Kottai, Assistant Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Palakkad. In collaboration with her mentor, she has co-authored papers in high-impact, Scopus-indexed, and peer-reviewed journals, including the International Journal of Social Psychiatry (SAGE), Geopsychiatry (Elsevier), and the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics; she is also serving as a co-guest editor for a special issue in History of Psychiatry (SAGE). To transfer academic scholarship to a wider audience, Dr. Sathya co-authored a prominent opinion piece in The Telegraph titled "Scars that survive", which critically examines the intergenerational trauma of colonial indentureship across the Indian diaspora.

She earned her Ph.D. from Pondicherry University (a central university) on famine history under the guidance of Prof. G. Chandhrika in 2022. Prior to her current role, she served as an assistant professor of history at KL University in Andhra Pradesh. Her scholarly contributions have been recognised through several prestigious national/international accolades, including a short-term research grant from the Charles Wallace India Trust (CWIT) for archival source collection in the United Kingdom; the Global Girmitiya Award (2026); the Tamil Nadu Council for Historical Research grant (2025-26); and a travel grant from the Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre for Privacy Studies to present a paper at the upcoming conference at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Her achievements have been featured in the renowned Tamil magazine Thozhi.
