Dear Parents/Guardians:
Re: SATEC - Upcoming OSSLT
Please see the attached letter regarding our upcoming OSSLT Test that students in Grade 10 write. As the test was cancelled last year, we have two groups of students that will be writing this year. Students who will be graduating during the 2021-22 school year, do not need to take the OSSLT, as it has been waived for this group.
More information to follow in the weeks ahead.

Hello & Salaam SATEC!
The Muslim Student Association is finally back after a 2-year break due to the pandemic! The MSA is a club that gives Muslim students at SATEC the opportunity to connect with their faith, and other Muslim students to build a community. The club plans to hold impactful events and initiatives throughout the year and participate in North America’s biggest Muslim high school competition: MIST (Muslim Interscholastic Tournament)! The MSA's mission is to help everyone connect with each other, their deen (religion), and to show Islamic spirit!

Hello SATEC Staff and Students,
The date of February 28, 2022 has been set aside for the Annual Black History Month school wide assembly as set out in the printed SATEC 2021/2022 School Agenda.
The Afro-Heritage/BSA Staff Advisors have arranged for two of SATEC's Black Alumni (Mr. Justin Bobb and Mr. Jamie Coote) who are the epitome of what both the TDSB and SATEC hope for with all students in the system and in our school. Both Justin and Jamie have spent countless hours giving back to their community and more importantly to their former High School. Both Men have assisted and coached years of SATEC Girls and Women, Boys and Men's Basketball teams. They continue to give back to the young people still today in their professional roles and businesses.
These two men have been asked to return to their Alma Mater to share their journey to success which happened within their 20's. Justin Bobb is the Director, Equity, Diversity and inclusion- Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto FC & Toronto Argos at MLSE and Jamie Cootes is a Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Playground Global Inc.
The plan is to have Justin and Jamie share their stories from onsite which will be telecasted via Zoom to each student whether they are a virtual or in person students. This allows us to have the same plan whether we are in school or have to pivot back to online. We have also planned for up to 100 Black self identified students to join the men in the auditorium for a Lunch and Learn session. The students would receive a small lunch and have the opportunity to ask questions about the men's journeys. The Auditorium holds 600 students so the ability to more than adequately socially distance the students is more than doable. We will bring in six HEPA filters as an added measure, and ensure the students are masked when not eating.
Please go to the men's links below to learn more about them and gain an understanding as to why they are an awesome fit.
Black self identified students who are interested in forming the live audience and lunch & learn can register by joining the BSA Google Classroom at
https://classroom.google.com/c/NDExNjA1MDgzMTIy?cjc=honqsgx
or by entering the class code in Google Classroom: honqsgx

Dear Students:
Hope everyone is doing well!! Last November 15th, IT Services send you an e-mail for all Grade 9-12 students encouraging you to register for the Self-Service Password Reset feature. The Self-Service Password Reset allows students to reset a forgotten password, without the assistance of school staff or IT Services. Last November, approximately 40% of all eligible students registered.
The Self-Service Password Reset tool is available to all students and allows you to reset your password without the assistance of your teacher or school staff. For students that have already registered, you can disregard this message.
To register for Self-Service Password Reset, visit, and log into online tools, such as myBlueprint, Brightspace or Office.com. You will be asked to register for the Self-Service Password Reset tool as follows:
A step-by-step guide and a demo video are available to assist you with the registration process. To update or make changes to the Self Service Password Reset methods visit https://aka.ms/ssprsetup.

Good morning SATEC Students,
African Heritage Month at the TDSB - February 2022
During the month of February, the Toronto District School Board proudly recognizes African Heritage Month. It is an occasion to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of peoples of African descent to Canada and the world. The chosen theme for 2021-2022 is NIA: Walking in Our Purpose.
The first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine, introduced a motion to recognize February as Black History Month. The motion was carried unanimously by the House of Commons. In December 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month in Canada. At the Toronto District School Board, a motion to recognize African Heritage (Black History) Month was carried in January 2002 and reaffirmed again in January 2004.
An artwork created by students under the leadership of their teacher, Matthew Chapman, from Downsview Secondary Schools in 2020 has been updated to showcase this year’s theme NIA: Walking in Our Purpose. Five principles of Kwanzaa are presented in this painting:
§ Umoja (unity) the tattoo
§ Nia (purpose) the logo on the shoe
§ Kuumba (creativity) the logo on the shirt
§ Imani (faith) the brand tag on the hijab
§ Kujichagulia (self determination) found in the fabric of one of the shirts.
There were almost 1.2 million Black people living in Canada in 2016. The Black population is diverse and has a long and rich history in Canada. This dates back as early as 1608 with Mathieu De Costa who came from Holland to Canada to work as a French interpreter. There was also a large settlement of Blacks in New French in and around 1734 with Marie Joseph Angelique. During the 1850’s and 1860’s many Blacks fled to Canada from the United States seeking refuge from enslavement because of the Trans Atlantic Trade.
Among the Black population born outside of Canada, the source countries of immigration have changed over time. More than half of this population who immigrated before 1981 were born in Jamaica and Haiti. Black newcomers now come from about 125 different countries, mainly from continent of Africa.
The African Heritage Month Volunteer Planning Committee continues to name, notice, and disrupt anti-Black racism through their organized initiatives shared throughout the TDSB and commitment to hold space for Black students, staff, parents, and families, to heal, to celebrate and to thrive. We are excited to share more information about African Heritage Month (power point).
During the month of February, several activities are being planned and they include a virtual launch to kick-off African Heritage Month (see details below) as all staff, students and the TDSB community are invited to attend! We are especially proud of the establishment of a scholarship fund, called Know Your Worth Scholarship. The African Heritage Month Volunteer Planning Committee’s goal is to award three scholarships annually, specifically, the first award, named Kujichagulia; which means “Self-determination”, celebrates students who accomplish academic excellence. The second financial award is titled “Kuumba”; which means Creativity. The students use art, in its many forms, including environmental stewardship, to express themselves. The third financial award, Umoja; which means “Unity”, calls for us to strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race. This award allows for student applicants to demonstrate their leadership at school or in their community. Supporting our students in a substantial and meaningful way in their first year of life at a post-secondary institution is important to us. Your donation to the Know Your Worth Scholarship fund is welcome and all on-line donations are tax deductible. Additionally, cheque donations of $25.00 and greater qualify for tax receipts.
Additional activities for students include: Know Your Worth Student “Black Youth Empowerment” Conference: Standing in Our Truth and the further expansion of the Black Student Alliances across our schools including a celebration of students for their exceptional work! For our staff, a Know Your Worth Educators’ Conference - Resilience: Building Visions of Black Excellence has been organized.
Daily quotes are available to all school administrators and classroom educators to share at their schools and classrooms as announcements throughout the month of February. Also, resources from the TDSB Professional Library are available for all educators.
Below and on the flyer are some significant dates and details about activities for staff, students and our TDSB community.

Home of the Blue Eagles!
Dear Parents/Guardians:
My apologies for sending at this late hour, but you will be receiving notification from TDSB that schools will once again be closed for tomorrow, Tuesday, January 18th. See below for further information.
At the TDSB, we are also faced with a number of concerns:
Students may not be able to walk to school safely given the road conditions and snow drifts in some neighborhoods.
School bus operators say many buses will likely be delayed, experience issues, and in some cases cancellations.
While plowing on and around school grounds is underway, it will likely not be complete prior to the start of the school day and schools may or may not be accessible.
We know that staff, who live across the GTA, may not be able to make it into school, which would require mixing of classes and cohorts which TPH has asked that we avoid doing except in emergencies as part of the ongoing COVID-19 safety measures.
There are 36 TDSB schools that must first have the heavy snow removed from their roofs prior to occupancy, something that could not be done today due to weather and road conditions. Please note that any child care centres located in those schools (listed below) will be closed tomorrow as a result.
With all of this in mind, we have made the decision to close all schools to in-person learning for Tuesday, January 18. Students will not participate in live remote or virtual learning. Where possible, teachers will provide voluntary class work through established online platforms for students who wish to continue their learning. Students may also work on previously-assigned work or spend time reviewing material previously covered.
Please note that child care programs (serving infant, toddler and preschool-aged children) can remain open to families, however families are encouraged to connect directly with the operator to confirm they are open. Before and After-School Programs and Extended Day Programs will be closed. EarlyON programs will be closed to in-person programming, however families can participate in virtual programming.

Good Morning Parents/Guardians:
Please be advised that bussing and schools are closed today due to the heavy snowfall. Teachers at SATEC will be moving to remote learning and/or will use asynchronous strategies if needed. See the below listed announcement from TDSB:
"Given the significant snowfall overnight and more expected this morning, we have made the decision to cancel school busses and close all TDSB schools – including those supporting students with complex medical and special education needs …." All schools will be moving to remote learning as much as feasible given the late notice."
Take care!
