In my spring 2023 semester at Harold Washington Community College, I dedicated an hour a day for three months to mindless drawings to connect emotional experiences to paper. This project is called a "Self Portrait" due to the length of the project being a combination of my parent's height and the mental process of coping with life experiences in the form of amoeba-like shapes. The inspiration for this project came from my love of natural form in biology and the desire to cope with hardships through art therapy. Keeping a schedule, persistence, and trusting my gut is why this project is dear to me. This project was also featured in the Harold Washington Community College President's Gallery.
Ink on Paper
Size: 3.5ft by 10.5ft
Timeframe: February - May 2023
In moments of life's tumultuous storms, I have been caught off guard and presented with some challenges I have been unprepared for or struggled to overcome. Art has become a safe shelter, an outlet to release my pain and shift the harsh internal narrative I was developing within an unforgiving mind. Born from these struggles came the idea of releasing my feelings into a visual representation of the therapeutic identity of coping and processing my emotional story. Through wave-like lines and motion, I depict tearful sorrow pooling after heavy downpours and shift the narrative to span a large distance, honoring how I have endured struggles yet remain resilient. Drawing these flowing patterns helped silence the storm within, gaining an unexpected calmness through this artistic process. I also realized that I could take my power back from negative influences in my life that were dragging me into violent turbulence, the kind of power that comes with shifting aching pain into an interesting thing of beauty. Artistic expression has helped fortify my belief in myself and my resilience. It has helped me realize that pain is not always bad. Most of all, it helps me understand that after the storm, the flowers bloom.
Not only has my project been shown as a final project in May 2023 on the 8th floor of Harold Washington Community College, but "The Self Portrait" project was also chosen to be shown in the President's Gallery of the Community College from February 29th to April 2nd, 2024. Selected by my Art 166 professor, Jelena Berenc, the gallery was designed to take abstract ideas and translate them into visual form.
