Hot Seat

Hot Seat is a structure that asks learners to consider and question a character, figure, etc.'s motivations and emotions.

Steps:

1. Ensure your learners are familiar with the story, concepts, characters, etc. you'll be referencing in this exercise. Find or clear a moderately sized space and place a chair or stool at the front.

2. Select a student to play the character, figure, etc. you want in the hot seat and have them sit in the chair/on the stool. If it may be problematic to have a single student play this role, you can ask a small group of learners to play the role together and stand around the hot seat, or you can play the role yourself.

3. Gather your learners (excluding any in the hot seat) and ask them to sit in front of the seat like an audience. Share that they're going to have the opportunity to talk to one of the characters, people, etc. they've been learning about. Introduce the character, figure, etc. sitting in the hot seat and review their situation.

4. Encourage your audience to pose questions to the presence in the hot seat. The person(/people) in the hot seat will answer in character.
