Frozen Pictures

Frozen Pictures is a structure that invites learners to use their bodies to illustrate various concepts, events, stories, etc.

Steps:

1. Set the stage for this exercise (metaphorically and physically)! Ensure that your learners are familiar with the topics, events, stories, etc. you want to highlight with this game. When you're ready, find or clear a large space for this exercise.

2. Divide your learners into small groups (groups of 4-5 learners apiece are ideal). Share that you need your learners to help you tell a story, illustrate a concept, reenact an event, etc. Explain that you will assign each group one part of the story, element of the concept, aspect of the event, etc. Each group will need to work together to create a frozen picture that illustrates the prompt they were assigned. Frozen pictures can be made with bodies and space only, and they can't involve moving or talking! Remind your learners to be respectful of one another's space and boundaries while doing this exercise.

3. Give each group a prompt, ask them to find a space away from the other groups to rehearse, then give them 1-3 minutes to create their frozen picture.

4. Once the groups have created their frozen pictures, gather all your learners back together. Designate an area in your space to act as a stage, and ask your learners to sit or stand facing it. One at a time, invite each group up to present their frozen picture! You can announce what each picture is as it's presented, or, for an extra challenge, you can ask the learners in the audience to guess what each picture represents.
