In my research, I use qualitative and quantitative methods to examine the use of "big data" within the criminal justice system. In my recent work, I analyze the use of predictive analytics and new surveillance technologies in a large urban police department. In previous research, I studied the relationship between individuals' contact with the criminal justice system and their involvement in medical, financial, labor market and educational institutions. My research has appeared in the American Sociological Review and has been supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy.
