This was the 1908 layout of Johannesburg (Park Station) in the Central South African Railways days. The Colours of the numbering on the diagram represent the different mechanical items that make up Semaphore Signalling. The Red numbers representing Signals & Discs, Blue numbers representing Facing Points Locks (F.P.L.), Grey numbers representing Points & Darker Grey representing Fouling Bars (Safety Bars). The layout of Johannesburg has changed many times over the years, in 1931 an all new 129 electric lever frame was installed as the station started to expand. Semaphores did make a brief comeback In the 1980's, as tragedy struck when the whole Electrical Signalling System, relay room and cabin burned down, this however was only a temporary measure.
