During the mid 1970's, The railway executives at the time had ideas for the existing stations south of Kelso to have signalling installed, and had the Signal Engineers Office draw up mechanical & interlocking drawings for the stations. However, it was later decided that the amount of traffic didn't warrant the unnecessary expenditure of installing signalling. Only Sezela got the green light for the go-ahead, the rest weren't so lucky. This was the 1975 proposal for Umzumbe that came out of the Signal Engineers Office. A new high level platform & cabin was built, they proposed a 24 lever frame with Backstroke locking on Home Signals. Even though Mechanical Signalling was never installed here, the track layout without signalling remained the same. The Station Masters still remained with their trusty Bicycles, and eventually the Van Schoor method of train control would be installed. By the end of the 1980's, all the Stations south of Sezela were closed, and with that came the withdrawal of passenger trains to Port Shepstone. Automatic Working (Van Schoor) remained for a few years until Radio Working (from Kelso - Port Shepstone) took over in the 1990's
