(MAN)797This was the layout of Manors Station (formally known as Palmiet) in the early 1900's, and it was a very common N.G.R. type scissors crossing station that was situated on steep grades. Also this was a very important water stop for the smaller Tank engines tackling the 1:30 Field's Hill gradient, with the water coming from a beautiful waterfall nearby the station. There were lower quadrant signals here and the cabin had a McKenzie & Holland frame consisting of 8 levers. Trains that needed to cross here would enter a Reception track (depending on its direction), then reverse into the opposite Reception track and wait for the opposing train to pass. Once the Station Foreman is ready to send the train off, he will set the required crossover points then hand the token / electric staff to the Driver. Webb & Thompson Electric Train Staff was in operation to Wyebank & Pinetown. When the New Main Line was opened in 1921, it was decided to close Manors as a Trains Working Station, with that, the scissors crossover and reception tracks were lifted & became a Halt.
Other stations with this similar arrangement on the Old Main Line during this era were Wyebank, Padley's, Alverstone & Drummond.
